FUNERAL YESTERDAY -- The funeral of Oscar Fall was held from the Charlottetown Funeral Home yesterday morning to St. Dunstan's Basilica. where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Justin MacDonald, who also con- ducted service at. the grave. The poll bearers were Mac Nicholson. Harry Ward. Maurice Dart, Joseph Flynn, Manuel Oatway and Ted Mcllrthur. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery.

POLICE COURT -- In the City Police Court yesmrday morning before Magistrate K. M. Martin. a city resident pleaded guilty of con- tributing to juvenile delinquency and was sentenced to a fine of S200 and costs or three months im- prisonment. The case arose from the theft of two cases of rum and one case of beer removed from a railway car on a. C.N.R.. yard aid. ing in the city on December 15 int. Two Juveniles aged 14 respec- tively and a youth of ill were in- volved in the matter. The Juveniles will be dealt with at an early date in the Juvenile court and the other offender also brought before the proper authority. A vagrant was sentenced to 30 days in Jail with- out optlon and a drunk and in- capable was sentenced to 310 or 10 days. A city resident found guilty of operating s motor vehicle at an excessive rate of speed was fin- ed no and costs or io days.

Negotiations for the transfer have been underway for some time, but have not. yet been com- pleted. Local officials of the Swift Canadian Company and the Co-op services had no comment last night.

If the deal is completed as ex- pected it would mean that the egg grading station. chicken killing plant and the refrigeration rooms, all located in the present Swift plant on Fitzroy street, as well as the big chicken hatchery in the Pt-irkdale district, would come un- der the control of the Island Co- op. Servlccs. The building on Fitz- roy street which houses the plant would not be involved as it is re- ported to be rented only.

It is'bclieved that when the transfer is completed, and that is expected to be announced short'v. Mr. Lennard McDonald will be named to be in charge. Mr. Mc- Donald, a former employee of swift Canadian Company, has been with the co-op services since they began their egg and poultry

service. He is presently in charge of the egg grading and poultry branches.

Farewell Party For Petty Officer Kelly

Petty Officer J. J. Kelly of the

U.S.S. Princeton, aircraft carrier left by plane yesterday morning for his base in San Diego, Calif. from where he will be flown to his ship in Korean waters. It will be Petty Officer Kelly's third year in Korean waters. Previous to his leaving. he was pleasantly surprised when relatives and friends gathered at his home on Spring Park Road to tender him a farewell party. A well worded address and talk was given by his uncle. Mr. L. 0. Kelly, and ti well filled purse was presented by Mr. Wilfred McKenna. Although taken by surprise. Petty Offlcer Kelly thanked one and all for their kindness. A pleasant evening was spent with square dancing and in sing song, music being furnished for the singing by Miss Alena Sulli- van. Recordcd music was used for the square dancing.

Sainis Won And Lost In Mainland Debates

Saint Dunstan's University de- feated Saint Mary's College and lost to Acadia University in Muri- time Intercollegiate debates held on the mainland this week.

A Saint Dunst.an's debatl: team of Messrs. Allan MacDonald and Robert. Croken won a unanimous decision over saint Mary's in Halifax on Thursday night.

The local debaters upheld the affirmative of the resolution "That Commtu-nlstic activltlu should be made a. criminal offense in Can- ada." The St.Mary's debaters were Messrs. Roland Dulhanty and Stan MacFadden.

Earlier in the week Acadia Uni- versity won a split decision over Saint Du.nstan's in a. debate at Wolfvllle. The topic of the debate was "Resolved that the Canadian people are excessively taxed."

The Saint Dunstan's debaters, Messrs. Ernmett Roche and Rich- ard wedge upheld the negative. They were opposed by Messrs. I-iunty Armstrong and Herman Hyrtle of Acadia.

The loss was the first for Saint Dunstan's in the last two years.

To Attend" First ' Maritime Police School

Cons. Russell Downs and Llcvyd Archer of title City Police force. leave today for Halifax to attend a Maritime Police School of in- structdon, sponsored by the City of Halifax and arranged through the Maritime Chief Constables Associ- ation. The school, which will be carried on for 10 days," is the first of its kind to be developed in the Maritime Provinces and will be confined to Constables who have been in the service for three years or over.

Instruction will be given by ex- perienced departmental heads and others with exipert knowledge on various phases of police work. In- oiuded in the variety of items dealt with will be report writing, police constables on patrol; use of po- lice equipment, (guns, batons, hand-cuffs, etc): law of arrest; criminal investigating; accident investigating; traffic control and allied problems; criminal code; evidence and prosecution: first aid; civil defence; firearms identifica- tion; glass fractures; plaster casts and fingerprints.

Red Cross Campaign Plans Well Under way

A couple of working crews from the Island Telephone Company took advantage of the favourable weather to run some of the new underground cable installations yesterday and expect to continue the work today.

Tire largest cable was run from the Telephone Company building down Queen Street to Kent. and contains 3600 wires, or to describe the installation properly,l80o pairs. A smaller cable, containing 1200 pairs was also installed through the same conduit over the same route. Another 1200 pair cable has been run from Company head- quarters on Queen Street to Eus- ton.

Under favorable conditions, oth- er installations will be fanned out on Kent to Prnce and otherstreets now requiring an expanded tele- phone service.

The lead covered cables are con- veyed to the job on huge drums to the manhole locations and are heavily greased to permit smooth running through the conduits as well as protection.

To avoid damage to this valuable equipment and pomlble interfer- ence in the proper working of the circuit, the manholes: are equipped with a. blind well set at the base. well below the cable run. Any sur- face water collecting in the man- holes is carried off at once.

Several of these wells have been enlarged and carried to a depth of 36 feet or more during the past week. as an additional precaution. Mr. E. C. Cameron, Plant super- intendent expressed himself as greatly pleased to see this phase of the work advancing so rapidly under present favourable condit- ions.
