Lhe Bostua Duily Advertiser, referring to the recent attempts to assassinate the Em-
peror Williain, says:
‘Tn the last twenty-five years two at- tempts have been made to kill the Emperor of Austria, two upon the Emperor of Rus- sia, one upon the Emperor Napoleon, one upon Victor Emanuel and one upon Queen Victoria, making with these last, nine in all. The first attack -upon francis Joseph, by the Hungarian Libeny, in 1853, was punished with death. Orsini and a companion were also executed for their plot against the French Emperor. But Karakasoff, a Rus- sian socialist, who shot at the Emperor Alex- ander in 1866, at St. Petersburg, was only exiled, and Berezouski, the Pole, who at- tempted his life during his visit to Paris in 1857, was not executed, and the person who fired at the Queen of England was only de- tained as insane.”

Rev. A. Fyfe, D. D., Theological Pro- fessor of Woodstock College, who is about to assume the Principalship of the Ottawa Ladies’ College, is at present the guest of Hon. Alexander McKenzie at the capital.
Mr. Bryant’s having produced what so many consider his masterpiece at the outset of his career recalls similar instances. ‘‘Vathek” was written in Beckford’s 30th year, ‘‘ Pickwick” before Dickens was 22, and ‘‘Pelham” when Bulwer was of the same age.
The late William Cullen Bryant almost lived out of doors, caring little for the weather, and ready with axe or pruning knife or anything that gave hearty exercise. At 75 he could leap into the air, catch at a bough, and swing himself along by it like a very boy.
The will of William Cullen Bryant was on Saturday placed on probate at Jamaica, L. I. The document is dated December 6th, 1872, and is in Mr. Bryant’s own hand- writing. Besides his two daughters—one the wife of Parke Goodwin and the other unmarried—only two persons get any por- tion of the estate, which is estimated at $350,000.
The Duke of Argyle, is a duke, two mar- quises, three earls, two viscounts and six barons all rolled into one, hereditary Mas- ter of the Queen’s Household and Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, Admiral of the Western Isles and hereditary Sheriff of Argyleshire. Besides which he is the Mac- Calium Mere, as his sires before lim have been for 6U0 years, and his son has married the daughter of a Queen.
The Congressman who is charged with having indecently assaulted a young ladv in a restaurant, at Washington, is a Seuth- erner, almost a boy in years. The ex-Con- federate who punished him is*General Ras- ser, who, in all probability, will. be chal- lenged. The friends of the Congressman in question, whose name is Juken, a repre- sentative from South Carolina, publish a card pronouncing the story as of the most unqualified, sensational, and unwarranted character.

The stock of sugar at Havana and Matan- zas, Cuba, is 20,000 tons less than last year. It is estimated that 500,000 tons have been made in the whole island.
At a meeting of the Management Com- mittee of St. Andrew’s Society, Ottawa, lately, it was decided to have a grand band competition in August, at which $1,000 will be offered in prizes, the first prize being one of $500.
As an instance of the good feeling which prevails between the native and British troops in India the Pioneer, an Indian jour- nal, mentions two striking incidents. The first was the turning out, to a man, of the 10th Bengal Lancers, to give a parting sa- lute and cheer to the 11th Hussars, on the departure of the latter for England; the second, a similar compliment paid by the Carabiniers, a British regiment, to the4th squadron of the 10th Bengal Lancers on the embarkation of the latter for Malta. The scene is thus described: ‘‘ The regi- ment had marched some three miles to the camp of the Lancer squadron, and when the march was sounded, the Carabiniers, headed by their band, escorted it the whole way through the station to the railway, on reaching which, the Carabiniers formed line, and the Lancer squadron marched along its front to the platform. Colonel Fryer, commauding, gave the squadron a general salute, and then followed “‘ three cheers for Captain Greeuaway and the squadron of the 10th Bengal Lancers.’ This was responded to by the whole regiment most heartily. The Lancers returned the salute, cleared the irunt of the Dragoon Guards, whose band jilayed Auld Lang Syne.” The Pioneer well remarks that-this entente cordiale will make the two regiments doubly strong, if it shauld chance, as is not
