partment, Ottawa, up to and including the Ist day of May next, from persons or companies, for the performance of the following stegmship services, viz,:—

The Irish Police Force.

In the English House of Commons, a few days ago, Dillan, commenting on the vote of £30,000 for Irish police, pointed ont that the claim was in addition to £63,500 already voted the police tor extra pay and traveling expenses. The greater portion of the money, he said, had been spent in endeavoring to snp- press public meetings and in carrying on the work of evictions. If the Engliah people knew how their money was spent they would rise in rebellion against such a system. No amount of such expenditures would ever sup- press the plan of campaign or public meetings. He warned the government that the meetings would continue to be held in defiance of them and if bloodshed should follow, shame and crime would be on the head of the govern- ment. (Hear, hear.) It was the action of the government that led to the commission of outrages, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, chief secretary for Ireland, contended that the ex- penditures for Irish police were necessary to maintain order. While agitators like Dillon and his friends incited the people to resist the law the police expenditures were necessarily greater. The plan of campaign, for which Dillon was largely responsible, was a mere or- ganized system of robbery. (Cheers,} Dil- lon appealed to the chair, asking if the expres- sion was justifiable. The chairman replied that the expression did not impute robbery to the member. Sir Michael, continuing, said the government intended to ask parliament tor such changes in the law as would make it possible to obtain convictions. Dillon's speech afforded additional proof of the absolute necessity of giving further powers to the gov- ernment, if law and order were to be restored in freland. (Unionist cheers. )

A Burlington, Vt. young man, who

Charles Quay, 38 years of age, was run over and killed Wednesday night by a train

on the northern division of the Intercol- onial Railway. He had been engaged

Forty-nine yearsagothe fatherof Harrison Gilbert, of Chili, 1l., bought a two-year-old pony from the Indians. When the war of the rebellion began the pony was 25 years old, but Mr tilbert rode him all thongh the war, and neither was hurt. The old fellow still lives, tenderly cared for. He hasn't a tooth in his head, lives on corn pread and bran mush, and is probably the oldest horse in America, if not in the world.

Benj: Ee. Sheppard, who was employed on thei. 2., shovelling snow, was thrown ae a train near Newcastle sta- tion, N. B., on the afternoon of the 3rd inst., aud crushed to death. He was stand- ing between two box cars on his return to work after dinner, and in attempting to jump off fell backward and was thrown across the rails. He was pushed along in front of the wheels for about a quarter of a mile. and when the train was stopped he was found to be terribly crushed. He died
