Sir Garnet Wolsely hasarrived at Laonaco, Island of Cyprus.

The single scull race for Wingfield sculls came off to-day on the Thames course. It was from Putney to Mortlake, and there were but two -competitors— Playford, the present holder of the sculls, and A. Payne, of the Moulsey Rowing Club. Playford was never headed, and although the race was at onetime very close, it was won éasily at the finish by Playford; time 24 m. 35 sec.

The Standard’s Vienna correspondent telegraphs that he can vouch for the accur- acy of the statement that Prince Bismarck, not long since, informed the Italian Ambas- sador that it was of paramout interest to the German race that Trentius and the City of Trieste should never become Italian.

The National Liberals admit that they expect to suffer some losses in the approach- ing elections for members of Reichstadt; but think that they will maintain a majo- rity in that body.

Srr—I went out yesterday to McNally’s Marsh, about ten miles from town, just to see how the young ducks were getting on, and for mere form sake took with me my gun and dog. Judge of my astonishment to find the shooting

‘A Monster Reform Meeting.”

T'o the Editor of the Examiner.

Str,—The ‘Reform Party” intended, or rather tried, to hold a meeting here on Friday évening, to appoint delegates to a con vention, which they are to have in Charlottetown. They had printed handbills posted all around, headed ‘‘ Monster Meeting of the Reform Party,” 2nd at the bottom ‘“‘ All friends please attend.” Only four friends attended, and two of them felt too sick to remain. it is said that the other two arranged themselves into a *¢ monster meeting.” Big Sandy occupied the chair, and Big Archy acted as secretary. Then, on motion of Big Archy, it was resolved, tnanimously, that Archy and Sandy be the delegates. The fact of it is, Mr. Editor, they have no show here. Messrs. Pope and Brecken will lead the poll by at least two hundred, at

Marriage and Music.

To the Editor of the Examiner:

S1r,—Last night the inhabitants of the north side of Charlottetown must have had a rich treat of music. It seems that a young couple were getting married, and the friends and those that were acquainted with the bride- groom and bride, assembled to do honour to the occasion. The Bjuvenile tin-pan-trumpet- cow-horn and milk-pan-drum-band, was the first to arrive, headed by Professor Chavari. The music by this band was very delicious, Of course there were a few discordant notes, but that could not be wondered at, when you take into aecount the little practice that this band got. ‘There were, no doubt, many of the in- struments out of order. I tooknotice that the drum had only one handle, anda piece of a hand towel drawn through the bottom. This, itself, would materially spoil the sound; but, on the whole, it was quite a success, and had such an effect on some of the inmates that they could not contain themselves in the house, but rushed out in their shirt sleeves and were going to castigate some of the band; but the music had such a thrilling effect on the bride groom that he had to go downtown for certain Officers. Shortly after—when drawing to- wards midnight—the regular band—or what I sup to te the regular band—came up to do honor to the occasion. By this time a multitude of people were assembled; but the music of this band, was very good, especially while playing ‘‘I’ll take to myself a Wife,” ** What shallthe harvest be?’ “ And to my Comrades.” No couple, as far as I can learn, has ever been so highly honored in Charlotte- town before, as to have two bands of music to Wait on them unasked. No doubt but what the Juvenile Band will be the one forthe next

We learn that the Government have ac- cepted the resignation of John Harper, Head Master of the Normal School.

A CORRESPONDENT gives a humorous account of a disgraceful affair which took place in this city last night, anent a wed- ding. He insinuates that the police were not to be found when wanted.

Tue public meeting, advertised in the “New Era’ to take place at Morell, on ** Thursday, the 26th inst,” will be held on the following day (Friday) the 26th, at the store of R. N. Cox, Esq., at 5 o’clock, p.m. |

Parnrut Accipent.—This forenoon, a lad named Peter McCarron, engaged in the Examiner Orrice, had his finger crush- ed by the works of the Gordon Press. He bore the pain bravely-—proving that he is of the stuff that true men are made.

Cricket. — The Moncton Eleven, we understand, are: W. C. Hobkirk, B. Davies, jr., 8. Fitzgerald, G. McLeod, J. Longworth, jr., VY. Longworth, J. Yeo, R. Higgs, F. Disney, Dr. Jenkins, R. Weeks. They will play a match with the Moncton Eleven on Friday.

Acquatic.—We notice by this morning’s ‘* Patriot” that some of our young men are working in the matter of getting up a Boat Race iv honor of the arrival of H. M. Ship | ‘ Bellerophon” and escort. We wish them | success in their undertaking, and hope that the meeting in Messrs. F. T. & W. L. Dean’s office this evening, at 8 o’clock, will be fully attended by those interested.

Cuance or Nane.—A meeting of the residents of South Wiltshire, was held in the school house at that place, on Wednes- day evening, the 17th inst., for the purpose

THe Catholic Total Abstinence Conven- tion, to be held to-morrow, shows that on the part of Roman Catholics, Temperance Reform is no mere bubble of enthusiasm, but a reality to be maintained; that there is to be. a systematic, continual and de- termined effort to check and curtail a great evil. Wenote that the Rev. Ronald Mc- Donald, of Miscouche—whose ability and eloquence asa temperance lecturer is widely known—is to preach the temperance ser- mon in the Cathedral. :

THERE will be a meeting in Oddfellows Hall this evening at 8 o’clock, to take meas- ures to establish a Council of the Royal Ar- canum. The Royal Arcanum isa Benefi- ciary Secret Order. It objects are:—

1. To unite fraternally all men of sound bodily health and good moral character, who are socially acceptable, and between twenty- one and sixty years of age.

2. To give all moral and material aid in its power to its members and those dependent upon them.

3. To educate its members sovially, morally and intellectually; also to assist the widow and orphans of deceased members.

4. To establish a fund for the relief,of sick and distressed members.

5. To establish a Widows’ and Orphans’ Benefit Fund, from which, on the satisfactory evidence of the death of a member of the Order, who has complied with all its lawful requirements, a sum not exceeding three thousand dollars shall be paid to his family, or those dependent on him, as he may direct.

The gentleman who is endeavoring to pro- mote this Society is the Rev. Wm. Full, formerly of this Island. Dr. Richard Johnston has been appointed physician to the Society for Charlottetown, and will examine any who may desire to become members.

It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compared with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYUNEY COAL, even at a much | higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ** EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coal as SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sranpDArp character of SYDNEY COAL.

It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving orders to trackmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way.

Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of her cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certiticate.
