The bank rate is set at one- quarter of one per cent above the average yield of 91-day treasury bills;. which this week was 6.04 per cent, down from 6.16 per cent a week ago.

Thursday's was the first break in the steady rise of the central bank rate in six weeks.

The decline follows last week’s announcement by the Canadian Bankers’ Association that the chartered banks were being forced to curtail their lending.
