It also appeared that in addition to the fact of Mr McLeod being appointed by the Board ot Trade, wuose Only object was to see justice done between all parties, the scales are subject to inspection by the Govs ernment Luspector of Weights and Measures and consequently there was no reason for the present state of dissatisfaction amongst the farmers, as it wis next to impossible for wrong-doing to take place

The Council, one and all, feltthe im- portance of allaying the discortent, if possible, but found that under the present circumstances they were powerless to act

Last night Temperance Hal] was packed to the doors to see the second perforthance of this really fine company. Prof. Wood, in his ledgerdemain, filled the audience with wonder. Katie Sanford charmed with her beautiful songs. This lady is one of the best sopranos we ever had iu this town. The cabinet mystery caused roars of laughter, as well as mystified the aud- ience. Miss Blanche Fernandez reudered some of the latest songs causing the house to yell with delight aad repeated encores were demanded. Mise Hattie Wood, in her mind reading, is a wonder to all. G. W. Burnell, the artistic manipulator, gave great satisfaction, andthe closing comedy sketch by Mr. Wm. Wyle, assisted by Miss Katie Sanford, entitled “An {rish- man’s Visit,” kept the whole house ina roar for fully thirty minutes. The duett singing by the company was extra gocd. We hope they will visit us again in the near future.—St. John Herald.

Conviertons.— At Mount Stewart, on the 29th October, convictions were secured by Prosecutor Brown against Patrick Doyle aud Mary Jane McQuaid ft: 1 infractions of the Canada Temperance Aci, and both were fined $50 and costs, Today, at the same place, Gertrude McKenna wae fined the same sum fora simiiar offence, and the case against Lavra Mcifenna was dismissed.

Diep Yesterpay.—-We hear with regret of the death of Mr John McLaugblin,brak e~ mar on the Island Railway,which occurred at his home near Douglas Station yester-~ day. We have not heard the exagt cause uf death,but understand that Mr Mcaugh- lin bas suffered from Llood-poisoning for surae time past, the result of an injury to his hand. The deceased was a brother of Dr McLaughiin, of St Peter’s Bay, and was He was a young man of excellent character, and had many friends by whom his death wi'l be mourned.

A Cuance.—A change has been meade in the running arrangements of the steamer Priocess. She will Jeave here as usual to- morrow morning at seven o’clock, but will not leave Pictou on return until after the arrival of the midnight train and may not be expected ia Charlottetown until about six o’clock in the morning. AFTER AN ANCHOR.—'The steamer H E Rennels arrived here yesterday, and is lying at Pownal wharf. The Reunele is from Buffalo and will leave here for Phil- ade!phia. Coming down the St Lawrence a leak was disco vered in her boilers and she} “laid too” to have the neceseary repairs made. While so engaged a gale came up and both anchors bad to be slipped. The s eamer then came to Charlottetown after an anchor, which, we uuderstand, was sup- pled by Captain Ronald McMillan.

PRonisition Demanpep.—The following joint resolution, which epeaks for itself, has been adopied by the two Alliances in this city and province :

Whereas the government has pledged iteelf to prohibition when it is the will of the people ; and whereas a plebiscite bas been taken showing a mejority in favor of prohibition; —

Therefore the Provincial and Temper- arce Alliances unitedely call upon the government to fulfil its pledge by giviig us a Dominion prohibition law at the coming session.

We particularily request Sir L. H. Davies and the other Island members to strongly support the government in pass- ete this law.

After sevendays she again reached Gaudeloupe, having run before the cyclone for many miles and was fortunate in escaping damage. On returning to port to discharge the balance of her cargo Capt. Taylor learned that the cyclone had caused great destruction toe property and loss of many lives at Gaudeloupe. It swept the coast with terrible fury and almost destroy- ed Kiogston. Capt. Taylor lost one raft of lumber which is the only loss he sus- tained.

Last Nicar’s Enrertarnment.—A good audience enjoyed an excellent programme in Kindergarten Hall last evening. The musical numbers given by Miss Collings, Mre Norton, the Misses Butler, Mr Mitchelland Mr T A McLean, jr, were well rendered, and heartily received by the audience.
