It brings he'orc mo scenes by-gone. When like thy own my heart was free.

Play on my little child ! ’tis well— I‘or life with thee is bright and gay ;

But soon may come a chilling spell 'l‘o force tlty careless laugh away.

This lesson. child, thou‘lt soon he taught, How bright so o'er it now may seem,

That life with care and'wo is fraught, And joy is but a fitful dream.

A time may come when thou wilt gaze Upon the past with moistened eye—

And dwell upon these happy days “'ith carc worn heart and bitter sigh.

The path of life may not as now Seem strewn throughout with thornless flowers : And time may write npnn tlry brow The record of unhappy hours.

I say not this to check thy glee-

I would not stop thy youthful sport ; For sorrow soon may visit thee,

THE OLD HOBO.

A capital story is told ofJudge Tappan. one of our Senators in Congress who is unfortunately cross-eyed . A number ot years ago he was Judge of a newly or- ganized county court,in the eastern part of this State. In those days of primi- tive simplicity, or perhaps poverty, the bar-room of a tavern was usedas a court room, and the stable as a jail. One day during the session of the court, the Judge had occasion to severely reprimand two ofthe lawyers,who Were wrangling. An odd looking old customer, who sat in one corner listening apparently with great satisfaction to the reproof, and presum- in'g on old acquaintance and the J udge’s well known good humor, song out, ‘ Give it to em, old ginibleteyes !’ ‘ Who was that ?’ inquired the Judge. ‘ It was this ’ere old hoss,’ answered the chap, rais- ing himselfup. ‘ Slteriff,’ observed the Judge with great gravity, ‘ take that old boss and put him in the stable ."

One ofthe street shows of Broadway for the last few days says Willis, has beena very accomplished canary bird, offered for sale on the broadside walk in front of St. Paul’s. His cage was fitted with a railroad and a deep well, and when he was hungry he drew a car containing seed up an inclined plane, and when thirsty he drew a miniature bucket of water from his deep well—very much to the delight ofa crowd of boys and by- standers. He certainly got his proven- der by the sweat of his toathers~forit appeared very hard work—and was a curious instance ofa purely ornamental creature put to hard labor forhis living.

A SEA BORIS.

The captain ofa West Indiaman wish- ed to purchase a horse. Ile applied to a well-known character, who sold hint one. After the purchase had been made the captain observed,—‘ \Vell,now the horse is mine, pray tell tne candidly who- ther he has any faults,and what they are.’ ‘ \Vhat do you mean to do with him ‘I’ in- quiredtbe other. ‘ Why,take him to sea. saidthe captain, ‘to the \Vest Indies.’ ‘ Then I’ll be candid,’ replied the other ‘ he may go well get sea, bttt on land he cannot go at all or I would not ban: sold him.’
