THE AWFUL FLOOD. Great Suffering aud Destitution.

St. Louis, Mo., April 1.

Information from the Lacoma circle be- tween Helena and Arkansas City, which is partially surrounded by the Mississippi and White Rivers, says that the people there are in a deplurable condition and suffering The water poured over the levees onall sides, and in three hours the circle was fill- ed even with the surface of the rivers, the wa'er averaging eight feet deep. It oe curred so suddenly that the people had no time to dv anything. Many of the houses were swept away. The people are living in the lofts of their houses. Some remain- ed in the trees ali night. The people are now transferred to gin houses.

The Irish Land Bill.

Lonpon, April 1.

The bill dealing with the purchase of j.nd and congestea districts in Ireland was printed this morning. It bears the name of Balfour, Goschen and Madden. The bill covers fifty-two pages, contains seventy- tive clauses, and is divided into four parta. The first part deals with the sale and purchase of land; the second with con- reation, the third with the constitution and jurisdiction of the land departmeut; and the fourth with the enactments repealed.

Che Times considers Balfour's bill an honest endeavor to deal with the problem. It objects to the land department consolli- dation clauses because, though possibly un- avoiding, they unavoidably tend to stereo- type some of the worst features of Gilad- sione’s agrarian legislation.

The News says: ‘* The more measure is examined, the larger grow points of objections.

A Big Show Day.

Peruaps never before in the history of Charlottetown was so much interest shown in connection with a display of new goods as was noticeable in Beer Bros. store tu-day. Their large establishment was visited at an early hour by eager sightseers, not oae of whom, we venture to say, was disap- pointed. Among the visitors was a repre- sentative of THe Examiner, who was courteously shown through the establish- ment.

The first department the reporter visited was that devoted todreas goods. ‘The very large space given to this branch indicates its growth and importance since this enter- prising firm made it « specialty. Nuthing could excel the variety of new materials, new colors and new designs visible. c cupying a prominent position were a aum- ber of London-made robes, exhibiting the latest style of drapery and trimming; and these, as well as the unmade robes, were remarkable for their rich, new cvlorings aud tine material.

Perhaps the most interesting and attrac- tive show of aii was that of the millinery. Lonion, Paris end New York, have each contributed to the immense variety. The supply of laces, fowers and ribbons shown was most bewildering—the flowers being perfect marvels of workmanship. ;

The impression mide by the wholv dis- pliy of goods waa that there was some- thing to suit everyone. The glove and handkerchief display was very attractive and we saw some really astonishing bar- gains amongst them. The sunshades, too, were of great interest to the ladies, espect- ally the **Utepias.” We regret that our apace will not admit «f @ more extended notice.

Easter Stock.—Among the Easter cattle shown oa Market Square yesterday were five steers and one heifer owned and fed by Blake Bros, The aggregate weight of this batch was 9,654 lbs., and the Messrs. Hlake Bros., consider them the best lot they have ted for sometime. ‘The cattle shown hy the Stock Farm were also excelleut, the cow purchased by Messrs. Blake Bros., for $104, being a particularly good specimen. To Biake stock, as given in the list in another portion of Tue Examiner, most be added a cow, fed by Mr. Lowther, ef Rice Poiat, which weigh- ed 1,270 lbs., and which did not reach the city until this morning.
