ANOTHER WORK OF ART.

The memory of the late John Hagan, of the firm of Hagao Bros. taanere, of thia city, who died about a year ago, is being fittingly perpetuated by a monument des signed end erected by the well known arc is tectural vecrologist and designer, Mr. Edward J Duffy, of Lower Spring Park, who holds diplomas from Art Schools of Manchester and Dublin. This beauti- ful monument is a tribute of love and honor to the memory of Mr. Hagan from his brother Thomas. The memorial is from an original desigo by Mr. Duffy, and is indeed a masterly work. The stone was cut in the shop of the desigaer by Mr. Duffy and his assis- tints, Mr. James Curran and Mr. Williem McEachern, who did their work in an admirable manner.

The monument is of West Pictou grit and quarried by Alex. Motrison. The basefis about 4 fect square and about lft.,8 in. high. The second base or plinthe is Lft., Zin high, the pecestal about 3it. 4in., the frieze or base of cros3is1ft., 9in., and the cro3s about 4ft., making the monument 12 ft.,in heigh’. the deceased. The cross which sets into the cap .or frieze is of symmetrical torm of [rish convential design, and is un- doubtedly one of the fin-st pieces of architec ural work yet seeo in any of oar cemeteries. The cap or frieze is hand- som: ly carved in bold relief, with a tre- foil ornament, representing the Unity of the ‘I'rinity. The base of the croes is finished with a cymatium, or cyma rec’a mould, and in the lower panel Mr. Dutty has eet a spray of sbamrovks. The diagonal! arms of the cross are also orna- mented with a beautiful Indor flower. There is also a carved ring connec ing the perpendicular and diagonal arms which is significant of eternity and is circum- ecribed with a heavy cable moulding. -_— _>--—

New York, Oct 3.—One of the greatest eurprises for yachtsmen since the arrivaj of the Shamrock in these waters was the announcement, offecially made at the New York Yacht Club, last night, that the Columbia would have to allow the Sham rock six and abalf seconds on a thirty mile course. It was generally supposed by yatchtsmen who have seen both yachts under sail and in dry dock that the Sham- rock by reason of her greater eail spread and apparently larger bull wouid have to give the Columbia something like a minut® of time allowance overthe thirty mule course which tney are to oui]. It appear’ however, that designer Fife, while giving the Shamrock a larger plan than the Columbia has at tbe same timeso con~ structed her hull as to give her great free board less displacement and consequently a shorier water line by almost two feet.

Sr. Jouys, Ni, Ot.3.—The Briti«h steamer Prodano, Captain Scroggie, 12 days from Baltimore for Leith, with a geveral cargo, went ashore last night at Peters’ Kiver, St. Mary’s Bay, during a dense fog, and isa total wreck. Eight men were injured, one seaman having his leg broken, and two others being serious! y hurt. The forepart of the ship’s bottom was torn out by the rocks, but the cargo on her upper deck, which is above water, will probably "be saved. The crew were taken off by fishermen.

Orrawa, Oct 3.—Coionel Hughes, M, P., arrived last night from Port Arthar. Despite official disfavor the Colonel is as enthusiastic as ever about his proposed regiment for South Africa.

That the military spirit is strong in the Dominion is abundantly evident from the number of replies rece:ved to the Colonei’s circular. Over 250 officers have volunteer- ed for service and the tender of men rang- ed in the vicinity of 20,000. Offers come from all parts of Canada, the Maritime Provinces and the far Westbeing as keen for service as the volunteers of Qnatario
