THE CAUSEWAY

This is the greatest project ever undertaker by any Canadian Government for Prince Edward Island and the effect it will have staggers the imagin ation. The Liberal Government has called tenders for the construction of this $148 million combined tunnel, bridge and causeway to physically join P. E. I. with the rest of Canada. x

It means, in terms of prosperity to P. E. I., at least one million visitors every year with direct and indirect benefits to everyone. It means bigger markets, higher prices for our primary and factory products. It means lower''production costs and consumer prices because of year-round highway and rail transportation. It means, most of all, that. P. BE. I. now is heading i in no uncertain terms to Bcecin ed a “have” province rather than a “have not” province.

This ts a Liberal undertaking and a Liberal Government wants to see it through to its completion.

AGRICULTURE

“Butcher, baker, candle-stick maker” ... the economy of everyone on the Island rises or falls with the - state of P. E. I. agriculture. One.of the highlights of. the Liberal. Farm Policy. is its dairy price boost - plan which calls for a national average return of $3.50 per hundredweight to milk producers, an increase of 23.2 per cent. This means increased annual payments to the 6,000 P. E. I. dairy farmers of from $50 to $300 each. When the Canadian Dairy Commission is officially established, producers will have control over prices, quotas, quality and exports. This eventually should lead to an average price of up to. $400 per hundred- weight for all manufactured milk used in the domestic market

But this is aie ert of the Liberal Farm Policy to strengthen our economy. Other highlights in- elude: crop insurance by July, 1967; formation of a Hvestock feed board; doubling of the amount of loans available to farmers; unemployment insurance and extension of housing aid for farm workers; a new gen- eral ARDA agreement with the provinces, representing $125 million, and the establishment of a $500 million

Fund for Rural Economic Development. .

FISHERIES

The Liberal Government. has taken {mportant steps to assist P. EF. I. Fisherles and the Canadian Economy. These steps include: Extension from three to 12 miles of the coastal fishing limit; extending the scope of low cost fishing vessel insurance available under the Fishermen Indemnity Plan; increased assis- tance for vessel coristruction with P. E. I. fishermen now getting assistance for smaller vessels and higher rates of assistance; and raising from $4,000. to $10,000 the maximum loan available under the Fisheries Im- provement Loans Act and extending the period from eight to 10 years. ~

And even more important: —

At the all but unanimous, request of the P. E. I. Fishermen, your four Liberal Candidates imme- diately after their nomination made urgent representations to the Minister of Fisheries on behalf of P.E.I. Lobster Fishermen, Effective action followed at once. The Minister of Fisheries assured them that legisla- tion in consultation with the fishermen themselves will be introduced to limit the number of lobster licences issued, and to set a limit to the number of traps set by each licensed fisherman on P.E.I. The fishermen spoke and your Liberal Candidates acted at once. Good things happen speedily and effectively—when - you are rep- resented by candidates who care about people.

Liberal expenditure on Industrial development: to modernize the catch processing and handling methods is 411 per cent above the level of two years ago; and Government research to help the fishermen is 50.5 per cent over the level of two years ago.
