Mr. Prowse in the Field---Unanim- ously Nominated at a Full Con- vention.

At the Liberal Conservative Convention held yesterday in Murray River, Mr. A. P. Prowse was unanimously chosen to con~ test the district in Opposition to Attorney- Genera] McKinnon.

The meeting was a large and representa- tive one, and a ful] quota of delegates was present from every poll. Unbounded en- thusiasm prevailed throughout the pro: ceedings.

Rousing speeches were made by Alexan~ der Martin, Esq., M. P., M. McKinnon, \eq., M. L. A., Angus MeLeod, Esq., M. P. P., and the candidate.

Three ringing cheers for the Conserva- tive Party,Alexander Martin, Heq., and the candidate were given; after which :he meets ing adjourned.

—Professor Angeli, the celebrated por- trait painter, who is the Queen’s favourite artist, bas just completed a portrait of Her Majesty. He says that during the sittings she had letters,newspapers,and state docu- ments read aloud to her by Prince Beatrice, and that her mental and physical energy seemed to be marvellous. Her Majesty is, by-the-bye, a very good sitter and an easy subject forthe portrait painter. Professor Angeli has been commissioned by the Queen to paint the portraits of Mr. Cecil Rhodes and Lord Kitchener, as two of thie most distinguished subjecte.

Lord Wolseley, Sir Evelyn Wood and Sir Redvers Buller are of the opinion that there will be no hostilities. The impres-~ son holds good in some quarters that the big force will go out, and that on such a demopstration the Boers will give in. This inveterate military habit of understanding the Boers is criminal'y imprudent. To this mustbe attributed most of our South African disasters.

Bos'on Globe: We mav all rejoice that something promises to be done in the Philippines now. Dewey’s advice with the president is law. The sending of three ships to Manila shows it. Otis, too, may ere long be superseded. The ad- ministration is evidently frightened at the commanding presence of the man who can be president if he wishes to be. Let us be thankful for this. We may have to wait for the reat.
