Tue last of the Dominion elections in the Upper Previnces added two more members to the Opposition majority. In Chicon- timi, Mr. Cimon was elected by two or three hundred of a majority. In Gaspe, Dr. Fortin was elected by a pretty large majority.

Tue Mount Forest Examiner bewails the lukewarmness of its party in the recent con- test, and says: ‘‘ Our Reform friends fight best in Opposition.”” They would have fought bravely enough on the 17th ult. had they possessed, skilful leaders and a good cause. — Muil.

ARTICLES written in a Grit strain and appearing in the News and Telegraph, are only shams. In their hearts they mean to write good sound Conservative articles, and if the Herald will but exercise a little pa- tience, it will soon find these papers safely on the Treasury side.—Moncton Times.

Prince Atpert Vicror of Wales is to reinain for some time longer on board the Brittania training ship at Dartmouth, and is, says the Whitehall Review, to proceed ultimately to a military academy, most probably near Woolwich. Mis Royal High- ness will enter the army at the age of 17.

An Awrvut Tureat.—Patrick Daly was arrested yesterday afternoon on a warrant at the instance of Miss Mary Daly, who stated at the station that Patrick had threatened to cut her throat from ear to ear the first chance he got. Both parties live on Main street, Portland.—St. John Sun.

Currovs.—Mr. James Stanley, printer, (late of Charlottetown) informs us that yes- terday his throat a small stone, which has been secreted in a cavity in the the lower part of his mouth for over a year, causing a periodical corruption and soreness of his throat. Yesterday, his throat becomin unusually sore, he was obliged to leave o work, and dnring the day, running his fingers down into his throat, and touching the sore spot, felt the little pebble, which is about the size of a pea, and brought it out, since when his throat has been grow- ing better.— Moncton Times.

Ir there is a moment ina humble re- porter’s career (says one of the Halifax ‘Herald’s” reporters, who, no doubt, got even with somebody of late) when that humble reporter feels that Time makes all things even, and that the press is the Archi- medean lever which moves the world, it is the moment when at a lecture or meeting the minister who used to bulldoze him in his boyhood, or call the congregation’s at- tention to his misdeeds at church, gets up to speak, and the humble reporter, shutting up his note-book and putting his pencil into his pocket, says to his reportorial com- panions, in a whisper clearly audible four rows of seat’s back, ‘‘Say, boys, we needn't give more’n a stick of this old idiots’ slush.”

IstanpER ABpRoap.——John Shea,a tramp, apparently thought he had a right to enter citizens’ houses and takea night’s lodging at his own sweet will. He accordingly en- tered the dwelling of the Mrs. Widow Bots- ford at the lower end of Main Street, on Monday night, and proceeding to the best room, made himself as comfortable as pos- sible on a sofa.. He was discovered, how- ever, in his retreat, and an inmate of the hoace went for Marshal Steadman, who found him enjoying a sound sleep, and after spending some time in awaking him, gave him a lodging fur the remainder of the night in the lock-up. Yesterday, John was before the Magistrate, and was asked to leave a deposit of $3, or remain in custody, board free, for four days. —Moieton Times.

Ovr esteemed friend, the Rev. Allan McLean, late of Dundas, has been laboring, with much acceptance, in his congregation ia Glace Bay, Cape Breton. His people have been engaged principally in the coal trade, the locality being a mining district. Owing to the genera] depression in business and especially in that of the coal mines, many ot his parishoners have had to leave, and he is going to move his wife and family to Dundas, where he owns a manse and farm. Many warm friends in Dundas where he has for many years labored ardu- ously, faithfully and successfully, will be glad to see the face of their former pastor once more. He will labor in the vacant congregations on this Island during the) winter. —Pres.

Patent on Pumps.—Mr. C. C. Jones, of tuis city, pump manufacturer, has secured three patents on his combination barrel

pump in Canada, and one in the United | States, securing his exclusive right to manufacture the same in the United States and Canada. He is mannfacturing the said pump in this city, and is prepared to fill all orders. A company is being formed in New York to manufacture this patent in the United States.
