the island of 6.500.000 people isiCastro is nothing but a symbol

going fast from bad to worse to hopeless.

There appears little prospect for a solution to the revolution led by Fidel Castro. Now enter- ing its third year. the rebellion is gnawing dangerously at Cuba's economy.

Cubans are talking displritedly about the possibility of many months or even years of cruel abloodletting.

One even hears discussion of a possibility that Cuba may even- tually be cut in two, with a separ- ate state formed in the eastern- most and‘ richest province. Or- lente. It is there that the revolu- tionary movement is the strong. est. And Oriente is a different world from Havana. provincially proud and suspicious of the cap- ital.

NEBULOUS GOAL

There is trafic irony in Cuba's plight. An increasingly strong in. surgent movement that grew in two years from a ragged band of fugitives to a force that may number more than 8.000 armed men, claims it’ls fighting to get rid of a dictator.

But even should the insurgents succeed in exiling President Ful- gencio Batista, nothing but a dic- tatorship c ould possibly rule

this rebellion. For many Cubans the youthful

of some distant dream of constit- utional democracy. But business people in Cuba who might like to be rid of Batista also worry about certain portenls in the Cas- tro movement.

They worry about the increas- ing influence of Castro’s younger brother Raul. whose flirtatious with the Communists is well known.

BUSINESS PINCH

The economic shock of two years of rebellion has not been felt as much in Havana as it has in the provinces to the east.

In the capital one sees few signs that this island is ripped by a malady rapidly approaching the proportions of a civil war.

But Havana is beginning to feel the pinch. Its economy. though

astonishingly resilient, is starting to slide. The tourist business. a lucrative source of income, has been badly hurt. ‘ '. Neither has the country as a whole yet felt the full shock. but! _ l

Even Cubans seem to be at I loss to explain it. Most observers believe the revolution came be- cause Batista returned to power six years ago at the point of a gun and has been unable since to legalize his office.

As Cuban regimes go. Batista's seems to have been fairly respec- table.

But Cuba is not big enough for both Castra and Batista. One or the other must go or the country will be threatened with cats:- trophe. ' .
