to the conclusion that they bad got some new hand at the bellows, as I felt unwil-! ; ling to believe any of the regular Patriot } | eta would display such ignorance of facta | or otherwise wilful misrepresentation of the actual results of the policy of the two parties and their bearing on the interests of the farmers of this Dominion,
The writer (whoever he may be) claims that experience hae proved the Liberals have been the real friends of the farmers by reducing their taxation and improving their facilities for trade.
Let us for a few moments take up the policy of the two parties » :th reference to the reduction of the farmers’ taxation and increase in their trade,
In order to expose the fallacy of the argument found in the article named, you will have to allow metogo back a few years to make comparisons.
As you are well aware there was strong indignation in this province against the first direct taxes put upon the ceuatry by the Liberal goverament in 1877,—n: t 80 much against the amount of taxes as against the unjust and partial manner in which they were levied,—being placed on the farmers,and all other classes allowed to go free. The Liberal party, under that unjust act, collected from the farmers of thie Province, iu two years, neariy $100,000 in «direct taxation. The people rose ip arms against what they con- sidered an unjust tex, and drove them from power,
Whatis known in this country aé the Sullivan Ferguson Government came into power and ran the public business of this country for twelve years, kept our public works in good repair, kept up all the in- stitutions of the country, and daring rine yearsof tbat time did not take one dollar of direct texes from the farmers of this country, and went out of power at the end of their term, leaving a balance of $124,000 against the Province and an increased sub- sidy from the Dominion Government of $20,000 a year to their eucceesore.
The Liberals came into power and largely increased our expenditurer,—noi in the interests of the couutry, bat in favouritism on our ferries, and boodling in our roaiaud bridge cervices. They taxed the peopleto the tune of $46,000 per year. and in the fast eix years have taken from the people $276,000 in direct taxation (Those taxes will be largely 1n- creased this year by the tegislation of last cession.) And how do they stand to-day ? Probably bankrupt, having to iseue ce- ventures to meet ordinary expenditure, and besides have rolled up a debt of $600,000, and, if we inclade the Hillsborough Bridge, $1,000,000.

How is the present Liberal Goveroment treating the representative farmers in the Legislature to-day? Last session they took them into town in the spring of the year,when their services are more required at home than at any other eeason of the year. In fact, it is almost ruin to a farm- er to ve absent from his bome in seed time. And here we are now on the 9th of, April and no cal! of the legislature yet °
Noble and great friends of the farmers, Mr. Scribe of the Patriot. Besiies, we have the hamiliating epectacle of a guv- eroment holding on to power (after this Province has declared want of eonfidence in them from Tignish to Murray Harbor) by the most Jishonest and dishonorable political corruption and jobbery ever practiced in any free country. The actions of the combination—be it Farquharson, Tar‘e and Davies, or wo ever it may be in the Pineau affair, would put to shame the most reckless of the Tammaay ring in their palmiest days. I cannot understand how men claiming to stand high io Church and State cau wink at and support such political jobbery aud corruption as bas been praciised in this Province for the last six months and expect this coun- try to recogaize them as honest and hon- orable men.
