down making it necessary for the neighbours to drive -by sleigh about a mile from where the journey was continued by car to New Glasgow to contact the Fire Department. The lines there also being down the. siren Was used to contact volunteer fire fighters.
The journey was made to the scene of the fire where it was found that due to the advance stage of the fire when first notic- ed and the difficulty in making it
as impossible to save the home. However the fire was dampen- of water. All the other buildings were saved.
Later that evening the fire ap- peared to flare dangerously and
‘|the fire truck was again sum-
moned to dampen the ruins. An attempt was made to -refill the water tank of the truck, but due to the below zero weather a rod was put through the motor of the pumping engine rendering furth- er service impossible. -Volunte- ers worked through chill winds to render all service possible.
On the following day a new motor was secured in Chariotte- town and volunteers worked until late that night to restore the ser- vice of this, valuable euipment.
The batteries will be charged and a voltage regulator and fan belt will be secured. The hose has

This report is of one fire in which the fire department has been requested to serve and will indicate the extreme effort re- quired of the department to ser- ve this and surrounding commue- ities.
Several members attended a m<eting in Fredericton and are they have be- come fire concious and are tak- ing steps to make fire protection available to their community.
The meeting adjourned and members proceeded to the home of the president where the lunch committee provided. a delicious supper for the re‘ freshment of the group.

The Premier recalled that he had expressed himself as being fond of cats..at..the time the -bill“was before the House. He said that as the result of a picture of a beautiful cat ap- pearing in the Patriot many people have become alarmed about the legislation.

the signal to start the debate all over again and before a vote was finally taken on an amend- ment to the act by Harvey Douglas (L-2nd Kings), nine more members got into the dis- cussion.
\ Mr. Douglas’ motion which was‘ defeated stated, “that no one without the consent of the owner shall kill a cat whether it be on the property of the owner or elsewhere.”
The whole matter was settled by striking out the clause en- tirely.

Dr. Bonnell in referring to the Premier’s remarks said he was not a cat murderer, nei- ther was he asleep when the section was passed. He said he had important business else- where and was not in the House.
He thought the act would give any trigger happy hunter the opportunity to shoot cats whe- ther they be on their own pro- perty or not.

Harvey Douglas felt that any farmer without cats would soon be overrun with rats and mice. He felt there were very few cats running wild in the woods and if they did kill an odd bird—so what, that’s a matter among the animals, he said.

Hon. B. Earle MacDonald said he recalled that certain people a few years ago were yelling “closure’’. He said some people might think this matter of cats Was unimportant, “but it was important enough for a qumber ef people to call me up—people who are anxious to preserve our wild life, it must be important to them,” he said.
Mr. MacDonald said it was all right for certain members to get up and take an hour and a half}: to say what could be said in five minutes, such as had taken place in another debate, “but when
someone wants to talk about game preservation it’s another matter’, he said.

Mr. Pearkes was replying to Opposition Leader Pearson who asked for an explanation of the apparent contradictory state- ments by the minister and Air Marshal Hugh Campbell, chief of air staf’.

Weekly Meeting
Zion Young People’s Society held its “regular weekly meet- ng on Tuesday evening in the Men's Parlour of the Church. The evéning opened with de- votions led by Diane Burgoyne and Catherine Genge. The scrip- ture lesson was taken from Prov. 4 (1-9). The meditation was entitled . “Wisdom is the Principal’. Hymns sung were “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling” and “Jesus. Saviour Pilot Me”. The minister of the church, Rev. B. A. Campbell, was the speaker.
The president opened the business meeting with prayer. Plans for a play were discussed
briefly. It was decided that next week a “games” night would be held.
The young people then ad- journed to the lower hall where games were-led—by Roger Bal- derston.
