The Defence Department in Washington issued statements by Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg. Latvia is considered by Russia to be part of her territory. but soviet annexation of the little Baltic country never has been recognized by the United States.

Closely Guarded spot

The Russians reportedlthat. the ahooting took place over Lepaya (Libau) on the Baltic after the United States plane penetrated about 13 mile! into Latvia.

The area where the shooting was said to have occurred is one of the most closely-guarded spots in Russian-held territory. soviet patrol boats intercept even fish- ing vessels which venture into the area. There have beln reports the Russians have a naval and sub- marine bare near there.

"when we have complete economic democracy. when every man will get his fair share of the wealth he has helped to create." If a man derives wealth from uatlional resources by the labor of others u well as his own.—then he is a co-partner, and should share. Every Cans- dian has a right to tap the econ- omic machine and get his share oi the wealth therefrom.

“The hope of the world is,in group economic action," he stat- ed. The time has come when we should start building this great and everlslflug civilization.

Dr. Ccady continued by saying that he feared. however. that we are too fond of the “frosting on the civilized cake." and are in- clined to disregard the funda- mentals. A builder who item with the proper foundation and builds from that has a structure which will remain forever.

Anything that is unused. dies. he said. so ‘ freedom will be taken away unless you take full advantage of your opportunities. if the American and Canadian peoples were to receive their fair share of the national income. they would be astonished at the amount they would receive.

Teachers Federation in Prince of Wales College auditorium yester- day. The ccurses. Mr. Large said. "are being arranged by the Govern- ment in answer to seventy-three requests from teachers through- out the Province.

One. oi the courses will be acad- emic and will give second yea: P w.c. work in a. three or pos- sibly four year term course. The second will give professional train- ing to permit teachers. to those partially through for licenses. and also to those wishing to take re- fresher work.

Mr. Large also stressed the need of making the teaching profession attractive in order to attract more young people. “Present teachers". he said, "should do all in their power to advance their profession. In the rural community the teach- er a.nd the clergyman share a heavy responsibility of forming and guiding ycuthiul habits and de- sires."

He also stated that there must be a reasonable financial return to the ‘ “ to compensate him for the years oi study and preparation. and the reward for his present labor and exertions.

In the 1945-46 year the vote by the Provincial Government for teachers’ salaries was 3236.000. and this has now been increased to 8516.200.

Another problem. that of pro- viding teachers with the tools with which to work, is primarily the concern of the local community or district. Mr. Large spoke oi the 350.000 set aside by the Provincial Government on a matching grant. basis. and oi the large number of rural communities who have seized

this opportunity to make long- nwaited improvements to their schools.

Another Ship With Fire In Cargo Continues Toward Halifax.

NEW YORK, April 11 — (CF)- Thirty Norwegian seamen aband- oned their cxplcsion-ripped ship in mid-Atlantic.i.oday and were picked up a short time later by an Italian freighter.

The crew of the Norwegian freighter Geisha took to the life- boats shortly after noon. A few hours later the Italian freighter Maria Paollna G. radioed:

‘‘All men of Geisha on board. All well. Medical assistance not re- quired."

The message did not disclose the fate of the 5,113-ion Gelsha—a wartime captive ship of the Nazis.

The Maria's message was picked up by the United States Coast Guard cutter lngham as she raced from 300 miles away on her second mercy mission in 24 hours. An- other cutter, the Barataria. also was heading full speed for the stricken Norwegian ship.

The 29-year-old Geisha was plowing through moderate seas about 1.442 miles east of New York when the esoplosion occurred. The scene is about 400 miles west of the Azores.

New York agents for the ship said she carried zinc concentrates and coppe . and possibly nitrates. which are highly explosive.

She was bound for Antwerp. Belgium. from ports in Chile and Peru.

At 12:35 p.m. 1557.‘ her S.0.S. was followed by a terse message:

‘Explosion on board. Need help. We are going into life- boats."

Then silence as her transmitter failed or was abandoned.

The lrigham's "earlier dash came when fire broke out Monday in a hold of a United States Linea freighter. the American Producer. with the aid of the cutter. the fire was brought under control 540 miles southeast of Newfoundland and the Producer headed for Hall- fax. No one was hurt.

Meanwhile there was still no word of the British-chartered freighter Fort Nisquaily which was reported to have struck a mine Monday night in the North Sea. The ship was built in Van- couver in i942 and transferred to London owners in 1944. No Cana- dians are in the crew of the 7,132- ion vessel.
