It seems that our friends of the Pheenix Club imagined that there was vo Club ov the Island fit to match with them. Like many other vain per- sons they were doomed to disappoint- ment by those whom they vainly thought unfit to cope with them. But they are, we believe, too plucky to accept defeat atter one, or even a number of trials ; and so we may anticipate a lively cricket season.

It is worthy of remark that the bats- mer who carried off the honers on Sat- urday had previously read and profited by the article on cricketing which was published in the Examrver a few days ago. Moral: read the ExamMINeR!

The Attacks of Insects.

Farmers: are often at_ their wits’ end how to defend their crops from the attacks ef insect swhich prey upon the piants. A correspondent writing to a contemporary, suggests a remedy which he has practically tested. Forsome years he has used some peat charcoal in sowing every kind of seed, with the most absolute success in every case, and in the foulest soil. As to the turnip and mangold, the application of this material causes the seeding plant to rush up into the broad leaf so rapidly that the fly can never touch it. Hence a crop is insured with- eut any second sowing. The attacks of the slug,the wireworm,the onion magget, and turnip fly are futile where peat char- eoal has been sown with the seed or sprinkled over the young growing plant. The writer referred to has such an exalt- ed notion of the value of this material and its wonderful preserving powers, that he looks upon peat charcoal as one of the greatest boons ever conferred on farmers and gardeners who ute it.

1 am quite prepared to explain and justify the course I have taken at the proper time and place, and will only remark that while | am prepared to pay all just taxes imposed onrae, | am not disposed to submit te exactions which I have good reason to eon- sider unjust and illegal.

He seemed disposed to adopt this suggestion, and promised to see the Recorder on the subject, but the matter bas not yet been formally assented to by the Council. As my right of appeal expired on the day of our conversation, 1 served the notice in order that my legal rights might no! be forfeited in ease the Council should not agree to test the validity of the assessment

The Entertainment Last Evening.

Dear Sm,—Being one of the favored ones who had the great pleasure of witness- | ing the performance of ‘* Olivette” by the Holman Opera Company, in the Academy of Music, last evening, I may state that the audience, as well as myself, were greatly delighted with the performance. The sing- ing and acting, as well as the cestumes, were excellent, and refleet great credit on | the Company. Miss Sallie Helmam is a charming singer, and wiil, lam sure, bea great favorite with the Charlottetcnians. Miss Blanche Bradshaw sang and acted her part as the Countess admirably. She ought to use greater care in taking her high notes, as she invariably sings them sharp, particularly her I’s and G’s. Her very high notes are good. Not one fault can be found with the fine singing ef Mr. Red- stone. He is a true artist. Mr. Dalton delighted the audience with his singing and acting. Mr. Holman and all the other members of the Company did well. I weuld like to hear the words spoken more distinctly in the choruses. The piano ac- companiments were far teo loud in the soles, and that incessant thumping of the air continually, impaired the effect of the beautiful solos, se well sung by Miss Hol- man, Miss Bradshaw, Messrs. Redstone, Dalton and Holman. Te such singers as these, all that is needed is a well-played accompaniment, and not to have the notes of the treble hammered after them all the time,drowning their excellent voices. The pianist should cr ought to knew that when a singer makes a decrescendo or cres-
