THE PREMIERS TOUR.

The truth probably is that the Grit lead- ers in the Maritime Provinces have brought Mr. Mackenzie down in the hope that his speeches would help to bolster up a falling cause, They know that there is general dissatisfaction with the results of ‘Re, form” Government. ‘hey find their fol- lowers deserting them on every hand, They confess to a scarcity of talent in their own ranks, such talent as is needed to make even a presentable case for popular consideration. In their despair their eyes turned to Mr. Mackenzie, and as the Grit leaders in the West appear to admit that their majority in the next Parliament must come from the Maritime Provinces (!) the Premier has not unwillingly responded to their call, So they-kave had him in Sum- merside, in Souris, in Charlottetown and in Jerwick, and he will probably speak in Halitax, Truro and Fredericton. ‘I'hus far his appearances bave been utter failures. His manner does not inspire enthusiasm. Badly off as the party is in talent in the Maritime Provinces, it possesses more ats tractive speakers than Mr. Mackenzie. His style is hard and coarse, He is no orator in the true meaning of the word. His matter is even less attractive than his nunner, His addresses thus far have con- tained nothing new. He has simply given a rehash of old stories and stock argus ments ; he has not added a fresh fact or suggestion to the political dish which be perpetually sets before his hungry audit» ors. He has convinced nobody, and the glamour of mystery and sham popularity which once surrounded the *selfmade man” has been rude- ‘ly but utterly dispelled, never to res ‘turn, . They have been weighed in the balanceand found wanting. They can deceive no longer. Ihe end of their career approaches,—and of this fact Mr. Mackenzie will have li:ttle doubt when he comes to reflect upon the demoralizition of his party in the Maritime Province.— Moncton Times.
