Several years later in May, a friend and I were walking in the woods and came to the former great clump of Mayflowers. There were no blooms there. My companion noticed it also and remarked, "There used to be a lot of Mayflowers here". My reply was, "There certainly were. We should not schedule any more walks for Mayflower time". '

I.am curious to see again how this second plot is faring. The field where the experimental plot grew has long since become a young spruce forest.

May 29 - Birders are encouraged to head for the fields and dales to participate in the Bain Birdathon. The counts can be made anywhere in the province. Please send reports to the newsletter editor.

GLEANINGS FROM THE PAST collected by Bill Glen

"At Grand River, Lot 56 on the 10th inst., from the Shipyard of Messrs. McAuley & Johnston, a handsome modeled schooner of 45 tons. N.M. called the Benison. The Benison was drawn the distance of three miles by sixty-two horses, to the enjoyment of a large number of spectators. She is intended for the mackerel fishery, and reflects much credit on the master builder, Capt. Bevan." (excerpted from the Islander, May 10, 1867)

"Perhaps one of the busiest spots in the hustling town of Souris is the Klondyke Lumber Mills, H.H. Acorn, proprietor. These mills are at present working night and day to fill orders. Despite the severe winter the usual quantity of timber is on hand at the mills and large quantities are held at the stations along the line of the railway. Conspicuous among the large amount of timber on hand were the large logs used in making cheese boxes, these logs vary in diameter from 16 to 30 inches. We understand that the
