The Appointment Oarvell.

Tux articles of the newspapers opposed to this appointment, have smacked much more of more vituperation and personal abuse than of fact or of sense ; and are, ‘ therefore, uaworthy of much attention.

advancer of this island ; here is a man who—judged/by the flattery and abuse he has suffered from a certain portion of the press, and by the misrepresentation, uniruch, sarcasm aud vituperation with which he has been assailed —and what better test could be applied—is, and has leng been, one of the ablest, most active, and most advanced politicians on the Island. Is such a man to receive no reward—not even ¢ bald honer—because, forsooth, he (id not happen to be born here? The idea is monstrous, scandalous to those who entertain it, and not to be tolerated. In fact, no one has ever thought of acting upon it. Men have come here after their hair had grown gray—after they had ‘lost their usefulness ”— in their own country ; have settled down here to serib- ble satirical articles and lainpeons on pub- lic men ; and, finding the occupation un- remunerative, have been fain to get down on their marrow bones to lick the corns they formerly trod upon, and to crave an office of the men they before abused— and they, even they, hava not been spurned, but have been given good oflices. Is it, then, fair that a maa who has spent so much of his life here, and done so much for the Island as Senator Carvell, should have his merit and his services unrecog- nized, simply because he happens net to be a native?
