LIBRARY CARRELS KILLED Students Program for Understanding Drinking (SPUD)

Library carrels will no longer be assigned to students for a semester. The senate. library committee met last Tuesday, 12 September 1988 to discuss the problems associated with as- signed carrels in the library. The noise associated with students and assigned carrels often pre- vents serious studiers from get- ting much done.

The committee decided that “all carrels in the Robertson Li- brary will be open to all library users on a first come first served basis.”

' Many students use the library carrel as a sit-down locker. The committee is now looking at ways to provide a replacement for the

assigned carrels in the library, but no firm plans have been made.

Another problem addressed by the committee is the lack of a ‘quick work area’ in the library for students. If two or three stu- dents need 15 minutes to work on a problem,- they currently have the pit as their only place to meet in the library building short of re- serving a study room.

The committee, chaired by Professor John Smith, decided that “two study rooms (room 202, 203) will be open for sponta- neous discussion to a maximum of 1 hour. Conference room B, be- hind the circulation desk, will be available to students by request at, the circulation desk.”

Students Program for Under- standing Drinking, (SPUD) is a new program set up by the Stu- dent Union to promote responsi- ble drinking.

Tony Doyle, coordinator of the program, says its the main goal is to teach students that if they are going to drink, they can do so without abusing alcohol.

“Students should know they

can have fun without feeling they have to drink excessively.”

The idea came from other universities which already imple- mented it. Doyle was hired by the Student Union in June.

Some of the ideas he has in

-|mind include an Alcohol Aware-

ness Day, as well as possibly hav- ing a dry event on Sundays at the Panther Lounge.

Doyle says the program is very much needed since studies

| have shown that 80% of students

drink and 10% of these suffer neg- ative effects from alcohol. Doyle noted that so far there has been little student feedback, but it is early and he expects little nega- tive reaction to it.
