Letter to the Editor

Just to Clarify!

Dear Editor,

First I would like to point out that at no point did I say that Andrew Peppin’s posters were sexist. Tactless, tasteless and com- pletely irrelevant? Yes, but not sexist.

Second, despite my high profile, I am not the only student to complain about the posters. Peppin was asked to remove the post- ers before I even saw them. We may seem to be a minority, though that is debatable, we are entitled to express an opinion. Please don’t spout “freedom of speech” to me while in the same sentence you tell me I can not express my ideas.

Third, those who have taken offense to the Guardian’s front page article should contact the reporter, Jim Day, or the editors. | certainly don’t have any control over what they print or where they print it.

Last, in response to Patrick Ross and Aaron Smith’s letter in last week's Cadre: | agree that students have many important issues facing them, including those you mentioned. That is the main rea- son to speak up against a candidate who, unlike the other candi- dates, has made no effort to address those issues.

I would also suggest you double check your sources, or your vision, when making observations. Each of the eleven other elec- tion candidates put up hundreds of posters on campus. Many of these also “politely advertised voting dates and times” and even locations.

| also agree that the number of voters probably increased. | suspect this was due to the five additional polling stations added this year by the SU rather than Peppin’s “measly poster”.

However, in the end, | must applaud your courage. Cer- tainly if it had been me, | would not have admitted, as you did, that despite the hundreds of other posters it took one advertising “free nude photos” to attract your attention to the election.
