Ortawa, June 9.

An immense crowd assembled yesterday afternoon at the Parliament building. The xalleries were filled to overflowing. The chamber was wreathed in black, and Sir John’s chair was heavily draped with black cioth Un his desk lay & magnificent pillow of white roses, lilies and carnatiana, bearing the inscription ** Our Chief.” Hon. Alexander McKenzie was present, quiver- uy with emotion and sheddiug tears.

In the Senate, Hon. Mr. Abbott made the announcement, sad was foliowed by Mr, Scott and Mr, Tasse, speaking in French.

In the House Sir Hector Langevin an- nounced Sir Jobn’a death, paid an elegant tribute to hismemory. Sir Hector was greatly affected, and aichough he had committed bis remarks to paper, be broke down several times. He moved, seconded by afr Laurier, that the funerai shovld be a public one, and that the House concur in giving to the ceremony a fitting degree of

svlewmnily and importance.

Laurier made a splendid spesch of cun- siderab.e length, which is everywhere high- 7 and Nicholas Flood Daviu ‘iso spoke elujuently.

The House then adjourned till the six- teenth inst.

The remains of Sir John were removed from Earneclitfe last mght to the Senate chamber, where they now lie in state, gusrded by the members of the Cunserva- tive party, who will relieve each other at intervals until to-morrow, when the fun- eral takes place.

The vast state cortege wil! start from the main tower of the Parliament building's entrance atone o’cluck to-morrow fur St. Alban’s Church, where the offics for the dvad will be said, thence by C. P. R. to Kingston.

All the railway stations along the line to Kingston will be draped in mourning.

The Supreme Cuurt adjourned yesterday for ono week on account of the sexi event.

The Senste Chamber in which the body will lie in State presents a magnificence of mourning emblems such as is seldom seen. All the seats have been removed, and over the scarlet carpet a white linen oovering has been laid, against which the sombre draperies of the wall and railings seem doubly dark by contrast.

Simplicity isthe chief characteristic of the emblems, as if the well known wishes of the departed statszeman had been studied to the letter. The brass rods trailing at either end uf the Chamber are wrapped in crape right up te the white shaded gas burners which surmount them. The red and gold curtains agout the throne and the throne itse’f are manteled over with mourn- ing ensigns. A

The pedestal upon which the casket will be placed is a simple elevated stand, wreathed in deep black cloth, with black silk fringe and silken cords, At the east- ern side and facing the catafalyue stands a solemn shields bearing « portrait of the sovereign. whose faithful and devoted ad- viser he was for many years in the atate. The Georgetown D:iving Park.

For some time Mr. John Kenney has been superintending the fitting up of the track at Georgetown so as to have it in first-class order for the races on Dominion Day. This track stobd wonderfully well luring the winter, and with the improve- ments lately placed upon it, will be second to no race-course in the Maritime Pro- vinces. Already a number of horsemen have intimated their intention of taking part in the races; and the free-for-all pro- mises to be the most keenly contested race ever trotted in this Island. Horses from Charlottetown, Summerside, Pictou and St. John are expected, and, in all pro- babi:ity, some of them will go into the 2.30 listfon the Ist July.

Mr. Lester Hayden was in Georgetown last vkek with two fast horses, and gave them some preparatory work on the track. He will probably enter both of them for the races, Mr. Hibbett’s Honest John is looking fine this spring, and wiil make it hot for his opponents in the 2 40 class.

There is all chances of = racing on the Georgetown track on Dominion Day, and the energetic committee In charge of the arrangements are buund to leave no- thing undone to secure honest, square work.
