In Review - Bryan Adams’ ReckleSs

i missed the opportunity to review Reckless when it was first released, but the recent release of its second video "Somebody" gave me ample excuse to review the album for this issue of the Gem.

You remember rock and '0”? You know, the stuff shat started Elvis Presley twitching and has since con- viriced just about every evangelist that it leads inno- cent souls down the eternal elevator to damna’tion.

it's been modified a lot since then —— reggae. rockabilly, new wave. punk,

heavy metal, etc., etc., _— and we seem to have lost all idea of what rock and roll is.

There are a few people out there still playing rock and roll: John Cougar. The Pretenders and a few others who can now welcome Bryan Adams to their ranks.

This album simply rocks from one end to the other. Songs like “Run To You". “Long Gone”, and "Kids Wanna Rock” are sure to put the bounce back into dance floors across Canada and the US. That's some ac- complishment on a conti- nent that pays little atten-

tion to Canadian talent.

Reckless returns to rock a few things which I had begun to miss: good solid guitar work, good vocals with that slightly raspy edge, and simple and effec- tive instrumental and vocal accompaniment.

in a music industry where everyone is trying to come up with a new sound, Bryan is a refreshing reintroduc- tion to the roots of rock.

Bryan carries his musical ideas in style as well as message. Listen to “Sum- mer of ‘69" and “Kids Wan— na Rock" and you'll discover that it's no coin-

l can see more than a few singles coming from the record. The catchy “She's Only Happy When She's

Dancing", the mellow “Heaven” and the numerous other likeable

tunes on the album should keep radio stations swit- chboards lighting up for a long time to come.

I need not even mention the success and airplay of current singles.

There are some guest ap- pearances on the album. Lou Gramm of Foreigner takes a backing vocal slot on “She’s Only Happy When She's Dancing” and even mega-hip Tina Turner makes an appearance to power-lung her way through "it’s Only Love".

Reckless is a fun album.

'The songwriting isn't com-

plex but the energy makes up for it. Production and mix are excellent. but don't concern youself with the details. ‘

Oh, and have a little na- tional pride — this guy is Canadian.

Fresh Point of View

Prior to the “study” break, I decided to go to the library and indulge in some fiction.

Having discovered from previous experience that it is useless to “look around” the stacks for something to read -— the books all begin to look identical — I strained my mind to try and think of a' book that had been recom- mended to me. '

I finally thought of one: Women in Love. I went to the nearest card catalogue selection and managed to find the box. Suddenly, with my keen powers of obser- vation, I noticed that all the authors' names began with a ‘W’, not all the books.

Undaunted, I managed to find the title section. 7

Having found the correct card, I looked at the series of letters and numbers with the despairing thought I would now have to get a pencil and a piece of paper.

Surely I could rely on my memory.

With a brief glance at the numbers, I went to the book room.

PR rows. There they were — all five of them.

I went from row to row trying to determine what number range my number

belonged in. 6037 to 6063,

6003 to 6011, 5366 to 5699, 4673 to 4872 Now, what

was my number? 6023 or 6033? 5023?

Back downstairs, armed with pen and paper, I found and noted the call number.

Then it was back to the PR rows. I finally found the cor- rect row; it was the one with- out a sign. With a growing sense of excitement and expectation, I looked for the shelf‘ of books by DH. Lawrence.

There they were!

Then the lights went out.

After resetting the dial on the switch to give me fifteen minutes of light, I managed to relocate, the books con- cerning D. H. Lawrence and-

his works. .

‘ Finally, on the bottom shelf, I found the desire title. With a victorious cry, I pulled out the book and ran downstairs.

As I reached the foot of the stairs, I idly, glanced at the spine of the book.

“Women in Love,’,’ . it read. ‘i‘AmoldN , .,

.Arnold? I had though the book was by DH. Lawrence.

I opened the book. Funny. It didn’t look like a novel.

It looked like a collection of critical essays

I refuse to even discuss the process of filling out a charge~out card ...

MOdeI UN dinner raises money

The U.P.E.l. Model United Nations held its prime fun- draising event on Valentine's Day, and organizers call the banquet at the Basilica Rec. Centre “a success".

Between 350 and 375 tickets were sold to the $20—a-plate meal, which featured as guest speaker Dr. David MacDonald, who is currently the coordinator of Canada’s African Famine Relief Effort. However, only about half the buyers showed up, and diners were of- fered second helpings midway through the meal.

The Singing Strings donated their time to play during the meal. and provincial Minister of Education Leone Bagnall represented Premier Jim Lee. who was at the First Minister's Conference and could not attend.

Twenty-two students from U.P.E.l. will represent the North African country of Algeria this spring in New York in its fourth year of participation in the National Model United Nations simulation. 160 universities from the States, Mex~ ICO. Puerto Rico and Canada will attend.
