made capital addresses upon the demand of the heur in reference to Baptist educational institutions. No affiliation is entertained fora moment. The maintenance of Aca- dia, in the same independence that has hitherto characterized its history was em- phasized, and au increase in the endowment recommended. The convention scheme in a very few years will give ample funds for all the purposes of the denomination, and the collection of funds by this method, at once indicates its simplicity, as only one dollar per number is required to meet all re tessicies.

The evening session, until adjournment, was engaged in rapidly passing through business. A resolution passed to petition the Canadian Parliament to preserve, at all hazards, the prohibition feature of the Scott Act, and to further temperance legis- lation to absolute prohibition.

The following resolution was adopted by a rising vote and ordered to be telegraphed | to Secretary Blaine :-—

The Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces, now in session at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia,offer united prayer to Almighty God for the life and restoration to health of President Garfield, and beg te present to Secretary Blaine their expression of pro- found regret in view of the circumstances of immediate danger which now threaten the President.

& Saddler at $20 and $25 respectively. For the first square mile in Gloucester County there was some very lively bidding, and it was finally purchased by Adams & Saddler for $3,350. They were opposed by Mr. F. E. Winslow, of Chatham. The same parties also bought two more square miles in the same county. The total sales amounted to $3,435. It is evident that the purchasers believe they have discovered some rich mining country in Gloucester. Mr. Adams, one of the purchasers has lately been engaged in silver mining in Colorado.

Official bulletin, 8.30 a. m.—The Presi- dent passed a very good night, awakening at longer intervals than during the several nights past. He centinues to take liquid food by the mouth with more relish, and in such a quantity that enemata will be su:- pended for the present. There is no change in the parotid swelling ; the other symptoms are quite as favorable as yester- day. Pulse 106, temperature 98.5, respira- tion 17.

There was no material change reported in the Presidents condition up to mid- night.

New York, Aug. 24.

The Herald's postscript from Washington at 2a. m. reports that the Cabinet, recog- nizing the critical situation of the Presi- dent and his inability to discharge the duties of his office and _ his pro- able protracted infirmity even in the event of eonvalescence, have decided to notify, or have already notified Vice-President Arthur that it is his duty to assume the functions of President.

The Colored Press Association met here Tuesday. Eighteen papers were repre- sented, the dele.ates coming from Ken- tucky, Mississippi, Washington, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas and Texas. J. G. Adams presided. A committee upon resolutions reported, calling upon the colored press to unanimously demand the opening of Oklahama territory to the freed men of the United S‘ates, for the support of the Mahone movement in Virginia, and for the employment of colored teachers in colored schoojs. Eecselutions of sympathy for President Gartield was telegraphed to Secretary Blaine.
