Too Severe.

The Argus says :—

‘©Mr. Joseph Millbara Dixon is not a faint- hearted politician. On the occasion of his second lefeat, he has addressed another card to the electors of Bel’ast, wherein he t snks them for the very handsome vote which they vave him on the 2ist ult., and announces “iat, if spared, he wili contest the District again in the ‘ature, Joseph appears bound to take time by tie forelock on all occasions, for he made a similar announcement subsequent to his de- feat in April last. Mr. Dixon would do well to give way to a stronger man wW ae the next election comes round, for im tue re- cent contest he was the only barrier to tne success of his party.”

This is too severe. Mr. Dixon polled as

large a vote as any of his party could ob- tain in Belfast ; and we are not surprised

If it he any encouragement we may state

that Mr. Dixon suits his opponents emin-

ently well.

McDonald’s Tobacco Factory.

In the course of his tour of the manufac- tories of Montreal, the other day, Sir Leonard Tilley visited the Tobacco Factory. of Mr. W. C. McDonald, formerly of this Island. The Gazette says:—‘‘ The visitors were greatly impressed with the magnitude of the factory, which employs the large number of one thousand hands, who are all working full time. Everything requisit te place the article of manufacture in a sileable state for the market—such as the boxeasin which the tobacco is enclosed, the tin stamps constituting the trade mark, etc. —is made on the premises. In the course of conversation it was learned that during the last six months the business has been on the increase, and is at present in a highly satisfactory state.”

Such is the declaration of a phy- siciaa who has again and again tried the ex- periment and with uniform success, He adds that cold or damp never prodaces but snply develops the disease of which acid blood i4 the primary and sustaining cause, and that while the blood is alkaline thére can be neither rheumatism nor gout. English statistics show that in one year—1576, 3,640 persons died of rheumatism and every case, it is claimed, might have been cured or prevent- el by the adoption of the remedy mentioned, at least two-thirds of the cases named. Heart disease: are ascribed to rheumatism and its agonizing ally, gout. Small pox, so much dreaded, is not half so destructive as rheuma- tism, which, it is maintained by many physi- cians can be prevented by obeying Nature’s law in diet. But if you have incurred it, boiled celery is pronounced unhesitatingly to be a specific.

Woxperret Trorrmsc.—San Francisco, Oct. 26.—Yesterday, Gen. Grant attended the Exhibition trot on Oakland Track. St. Julian was brought out to beat the best time made by Rarus. St. Julian was followed a short distance by a runninghorsé. He never made a skip or break, coming in in the unprecedent- ed ,tims of 2.123, apparently but little the worse for his effort. ‘The result was received with prolonged cheering.

Mr. ANDREW WILsoN, part praprietor of the Montreal Herald, and formerly chief edi- tor of that paper, died on Monday morning last from softening of the brain. The deceas- ed gentleman was well known in Montreal, having held an honorable position for many

ears in the city. He was a Mason and was aried with Masonic ceremonies.

Death or Senator Zach. CHANDLER.—A despatch from Chicago, on Saturday,, states that ‘‘Senator Zach. Chandler, of Michigan, was found dead in his bed at the Grand Pacific Hotel Friday night. He spoke that night with his usual earnestness to an immense audience, but later in the cvening complained of in digestion. From a partial examination, Dr. MeVicker, who was immediately called, is ol opinion that the death of Mr. Chandler was the result of sudden congestion of the lungs, brought about by cold which he contracted at Janesville.
