Sir John is said to be anxious to return to Riviere da Loup, where he has » summer house.

Watrace Ross leaves St. John this week for Portland, Mame, where he will join Davis and Kennedy. He says he is deter- mined to have a race with Hanlan, for the sum named by the latter, $5,000, if he can possibly raise the money. He is confident of succesa, and thinks the high stakes named by Hanlan. is only a ruse to avoid a contest.

In the forenoon of yesterday, at Prince street Methodist Church, and in the even- ing at the Kirk, Rev. Dr. McKay, of For- mosa, preached e! quently and at great longth, to very large audiences, on the sub- ject of his mission. He also addressed the Sunday School of Zion Church, in the afternoon. He has created a great deal of intérest in his missionary life and work.

A Heavy storm, accompanied by loud thunder and vivid lightning, passed over this city yesterday evening jbetween 7 and 8 o'clock. Several of the tombstones in the English burying ground, on Upper Soring Park Road, were struck and broken to pieces, and the lightning appeared so bright around the Upper Prince Street Church as to cause a kind of panic in the congregation. At Southport, the cottage ofa manin the employ of Henry Beer, Esq., was struck. The chimney was shat- tered, and a stove, to use the words of our informant, ‘‘was scattered promiscuously around the room.’

THe Heavens.— Vents reached her great est brilliaacy on Saturday, and her greatest elongation wast wi!) he reached on the 12th af July, to-morrow. (On the 20th ef this month Mercury will appear in the evening sky, being then 25 degrees ? mi autes east of the sun. The long twilight, however, will interfere with ob- servations. The constellations of the semmer are now in their glory. Gemini, Lee and Auriga are sinking in the west. Virgo has passed the meridian. Bootes is nearly on the meridian. The handle of the great dipper is in the zenith. Due north, Perseus skirts the horizon. Hercules is approaehing the meri- dian, and the constellation of the Lyre is well up in the northeast. The great croas of Cygnus still lies prone along the milky way below the Lyre, and Aquila is rising in the southeast. Scerpi, with its red heart, Antares, is the glory of the south.

Nor Boevs.—The case of Francis Mc- Donald, charged with uttering bogus coin, was resumed at the Stipendiary Magistrates’ Court this forenoon. The evidence of Mr. Brown, of the Boston Silver Plating Co., and that of Mr. William W. Wellner was heard. Mr. Brown testified that the coin produced, and said to be bogus, was washed with a silver wash. It would only remain fora few days and then grow dim, as it was to-day. He could net swear whether coin was silver or nickle, and he believed that to keep it so bright as it was when shown to him the first day, it must have been washed a short time pre- vious to his seeing it. Mr. Wellner tested the coins, «aid to be bogus, and testi- fied that it was as good as the coin in rega'ac cirsulation—it was not bogus. These facts, brought to light, knocked the bottom entirely out of the case so far as bogus money was concerned, and Mr. Mc- Donald was discharged. There is some- thing strange about this case, and a great injustice seems to have been done to Mr, McDonald. He positively asserts that he never saw the coin previous to the trial, much less pass them ever his counter to the complainant, Donald MeDonald, three weeks ago. This statement is atrengthehed by the evidence of Mr. Brown, who has had much experience in silver washing and silver plating. He says that the wash would only remain on coin about three days, and his statement is corroborated by the fact that, while «le coins said to be bogus, dazzled with brichtness on Thursday last, to-day they are dim as zinc. These facts show that Mr McDonald has been

improperly treatvd,and that the Magistrates should hereafter be carefal, before arraign- ing a person on « serious eharge, to see that

there is good grounds for so doing.

Several of the strikers were wounded by the police; one named Grevillier and another named Young very badly, but not necessarily fatally. A jady in Murphy’s Hotel, opposite the wharf, narrowly es- caped death, as a bullet went through the window within two inches of where she was lovking out.

Santa Fe, July 8.

On Sunday the stage coach from El Pass to Chiknakua was attacked by Indians who fired a volley. ‘The driver was killed. The passengers escaped except Pugh —son of ex- Senator Pugh -who was captured while en- deavoring to get a pistol out of the eoach. The eoach was burned and a large amount of Chikuakua money toro to fragments was found on the ground.
