Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program

Pillsbury Undergraduate Scholarship Program:

The purpose of the Pillsbury Undergraduate Scholarship Pro- gram is to encourage scholastic achievement and development in areas which are of primary concern to Pillsbury Canada Limited. Two awards of $1250.00 will be awarded to students of Busi- ness /Commerce and two awards of $1250.00 will also e given to students of Food Sciences and Agricultural Science. This pro- gram is open to all faculties of Business/Food Science/ Agricultural Science at Canadian Universities. Four university scholarships are awarded annually.

Eligibility is limited to students who have completed their sec- ond full year of study towards their undergraduate year. Evalua- tion will be based on the student’s academic transcripts as well as participation in extra-curricular activities. completed applications are to be sent directly to the Scholarship Selection Committee not later than Nov. 30:

Orville Erikson Memorial Scholarship Fund

The fund consists of a 5-member board of trustees. The

Board is responsible for the selection of candidates who will re- ceive scholarship in any given year. The Canadian Wildlife Founda- tion receives, collects, and distributes applications to the OEMSF Trustees. The Trustees evaluate application and submit their list of application warrenting support. All scholarships cover a regular academic year. Each scholarship is divided into two equal parts. One unit is issued in September; the other, in January. Applica- tion may be made for a summer or other sessions.

Aristotle said, “ There are only two parts to a speech: You make a statement and you prove it.” This is the essence of debat- ing, producing logical arguments that your opponents can’t refute. On the converse, it is attaching the logical and evidential chinks in your opponent’s armour.

But debating is much more than this; it’s also thinking, act- ing, the thrill of competition, the glory of victory, the determina- tion that springs from defeat. Formal debate is comlex, graceful and prfound, while at the same time it is harsh, concrete and practical. It is one of the old- est activities of civilization, and a crucial right modern democra- cies. You have an invitation to join us and train your mind while developing skills in argumenta- tion, analysis, and speech that will be a freat asset to you what- ever you do in life. you have a chance to try your hand at the an- cient art of public speaking and ebating that today controls al- most ever major facet of our so- ciety, government, law, and busi- ness, to name jus the most obvi- cous. Whether you are speaking in the House of Commons, address- ing a jury, presenting a business report, defending your thesis, or just arguing wiht your spouse, the skill you develop with us will help you when you graduate.

Debating is an important and fun’ experience that you may never forget. It make no dif- ference if you’ve never spoken in public before in you life; We are all learning and improving. De- bating is a difficult art, but one which is infinitely rewarding. Ev- eryone interested in finding out more about debating is encour- aged to attend one of our weekly meetings, which are held ‘every Wednesday at 3:30 in Main 311.

The McEuen Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of Dr. charles Stuart McEuen to a Canadian student resident in Canada who is of Schottish ancestry, or is the son or daughter of an | alumnus of the Unversity of St. Andrews. The Scholarship is ten- able for a three-year course of studies toward an ordinary degree or a four-year course toward an honours degree. ‘It is renewable from year to year on the basis of satisfactory performance. Appli- cants must not be more than 21 years of age and must be attend- ing university in Canada or be qualified for admission into a uni- versity in Canada. the winner is chosen on the basis of outstand- ing academic achievement and leadership potential.
