Young Ladies’ School Dresses.

It is too often the practice at school examinations to array young school girls in costly fabrics, fitted with all the

dressmakers’ art and skill. Besides distractiog the pupil’s mind from the

studies for weeks and months before commencement day and filling it with speculations upon the fascinations of dress, these “dress parades,” are an obvious injustice to the young ladies whose. parents cannot afford such exp ios It very naturally morti- fies and humiliates them, and, in many instances, leads the sensitive girl to leave the school rather than endnre the disagreeable contrast. Parents, whether rich or poor, if they are sen- sible and intelligent, would much prefer to have their daughters’ minds free trom the distracting thoughts of dress while pursuing their studies; and a brilliant examination showing the re- sources ofa bright and active mind will array a young lady in more beauty and grace than the most expensive gown. if the mental achievements of the young lady are exceptionally _ bril- liant, the dress she is arrayed in will

attract no attention. On the other hand, if her mind is sluggish or dormant, a gorgeous gown will only

serve to emphasize the defect by singl- iug the young lady out asa person pe= culiarly obtuse. Costly dress on such occasious, therefore, is either an

tive misfortune. The bright and brilliant young lady will not

require it. The pupil whose mind is dull, or who, permitting her faculties to be consumed with thoughts of dress, has neglected her studies, will find that her intellectual defects are all the more!
