They attached her to the second well dug and in the first haif hour she succeeded in drying the spring under the bank above the road; but after that she could not, reduce the water to any perceptible extent whatever, the water remaining station- ary in all the springs. The engine worked at the rate of 134 revolutions per minute. So Ow Saturday last the children attending Trinity School, Georgetown, their parents and Rev. Mr. Cooper, through the courtesy of Mr. Joseph Fairchild, had a very enjoyable ssil up the Montague River to the Bridge. In the Commons, this evening, Sir Henry Holland, Colonial Secretary, read a -cable- gram from Lord Lansdowne, declaring that the report that Sir Jonn Macdonald said he would not hesitate to ask the aid of Imperial troops to stop the construction of the Manitoba Railway wasa pure fabrication. Lord Landowne also said: **The provincial

Railway was disallowed by me on advice of my respensible advisers on the ground that the proposed’ fine would tap the traffic of the Canadian Paeifie Railway, and thereby seriously injuve the interests of the whole country, which sabmitted to large sacrilices to. unite the provinces by a provincial road.”

News from the Northwest.

Monrreat, Aug. 30. Sir George, Stephen, Sir Donald Smith and Mr. VanHorne have just returned from the Northwest. They report that the crops are in splendid condition. Mr. Van- Horne says that the C. P. R. will not interfere with the construction of the Red River Valley Road, the matter being entirely between the Dominion = and Manitoba. The Government regards the coustruction of the road as an unwarranted attack on the. company and against the interests of Canada, and says that the promoters are in favor of annexation, and that as soon as the read is completed they will want the Custom House removed. The Parnellites Determined. Lonpon, Aug. 29. The Parnellites are determined that Par- liament shall not rise until a decision is reached in the case of O'Brien. They be- gan to-night a prolonged discussion on the Irish estimates. Even by a_ resort to the Closure Rule the Government will be un- able to balk their purpose. O’Brien’s trial opens on Sept. 8. Any attempt by the prosecuution to strain the .meaning of the Urimes Act as affecting O'’Brien’s case will be the occasion of a fierce protest by his colleagues in Parliament. The Conserva- tive whips are obliged to keep 20 members within hail to prevent a surprise.

Havirax, N. S., Aug. 29.

The Gas Light Company have bought out the Halifax Electric Company’s plant and will for $90,000.

Jamieson still continues to inform on the saloon keepers, and even those who were thought most respectable are summoned. He says he has evidence to convict thirty dealers.

An Elephant on the Rampage.

INGERSOLL, Ont., Aug. 29.

The largest elephant in Robbins’ Circus escaped this evening and is still at large. A large gang of men and two other ele- phants are scouring the country for him. So far he has not done any damage except demolishing a few fences which blocked his way.

Another Earthquake Shock. Crry or Mexico, Aug. 30.

A brisk earthquake shock was felt this morning, agitating the houses and making the people dizzy. In some streets the people ran out and fell on their knees praying. The shock was mostly felt in the outlying portion of the city, lasting some thirty seconds.
