ASAD AND FATAL ACCIDENT.

One of Our P E, Islind Yourg Men in Leadville, Col, Killed.

Wm. Stewart, Eeq., of Peter’s Road, Lot 63, received a telegram on the 8th inst. from Leadville, where he had three sons living, informing him that his son Charles had been instantly killed. Since that he has received the following particulars : Mr. Stewart along with others had been engaged at ajob in the mines, and when completed they were hoisting up a pump on top of which he stood, aud when about 150 feet up the shaft the rope fastening it to the cable broke and falling to the bottom he was _ instantly killed. Few young men were more highly esteem- ed ffom early years than Charles Stewart, or more woPthy of esteem. He left the Island about ten years ago, and might well be looked upon as “fone of our suc- cessful Islanders abroad.” He was 29 years of age, and leaves a widow, but no children. In the land of his adoption he was a universal favorite. His sud-len and untimely death cast quite a gloom over Leadville. As his widow intends making her home in Leadville, his re- mains were interred there. At the fun- eral everything that kind hands and lov- ing hearts could do was done to show the

respect in which he was _ held. The services were held ip the Presbyterian Church, which

was full to overflowing. The coffia, which was a very expensive one, was simply a mass of flowers. Three societies turned out in uniform to do their comrade honor, and the entire expenses of the funeral were borne by the company owning the mine in which he was killed.

We sincerely sympathize with the fam ily, but most especially with the eged par ente, who in their declining years have- thus in such asad manner to part with one of the best and kindest of sone, and hope and pray that God, who alone is the God of all consolation, may comfort them. —Com.

Political Reunions and Oficial Promotions,

Sir Mackenzie Bowell has not yet indi- cated when he purposes to retire from the field of active politics, But there seems to be no doubt that the Premier’s resignation will not be delayed beyond Tuesday next.

Sir McKenzie is methodical and natur- ally before he steps out of office there are certain things he would desire to complete, and the few days since Parliament was pro- rogued have been spent. in this work There is the further fact that Sir Macken- zie Bowell, Sir Donald Smith and Sanford Fleming have booked their passages to England by the Lucania, leaving New New York on May 9th.

At Saturday’s meeting of the cabinet some important business was transacted.

William Smith, Deputy Mivister cf Marise, and L. A. Catelier, Under Sec ret- ary of State, were superannuated and these appointments were mace: Major I’. Gourdeau, accountant of the Marine De- partment, to be Deputy Minister of the same department; Joseph Pope, assistant clerk of the Privy Council, to be Uoder Secretary of State,and J. L. Payne, private secretary, to be assistant secretary of the Privy Council.
