Alexand er, rabbi of the Jewish church in Omaha, ore- ated a riot in his church last Saturday morn- ing by declaring that the story of Christ hav- ing been nailed upon the cross and exposed to the execration of the mob was a myth. His congregation at once rose to & man and rush- ed for the rabbi, who beat « precipitate re- treat. He would have been killed had he been caught. The polide came to his rescue. " ; Some Statistics. —R. N. Knight, regis- trar of births, deaths and marriages for the eity and county of St. John, says that dur- ing the past year there werereported to him 635 births, 359 marriages, : Of this number 238 marriages, 394 births and 589 deaths took place during the last six months, thus showing & considerable increase over the first half of the year. ~~»

Partridge yesterday displayed, as an evi- dence of the mildness of the present weather, a gladiolus fourteen inches in length, which was growing in his garden in the open sir. His apple trees still re- tain their green leaves. In the garden of Geo. Pottinger, corner of Cook and North Park streets, is an apple tree in full bloom.

More Goop Gvessine.—The number of seeds in the pumpkin on exhibition in the Tea Store, Queen Street, for sometime past, were counted yesterday by Mr. George M. Harris. There were 789 seeds in all. Miss J. P. McLean, Charlottetown, guess- ed 780, and won the tea service. Mise Minnie Waddell was the second nearest. The guesses ranged from 12 to 1000.

LaNNow AND GoprREY.—The Boston Ath- enian Club has offered to give a purse of $500 for a 12 round glove contest between heavy weights Joe Lannon and Geo. Godfrey, the men to spar, in the event of acceptance of the terms, at the next exhibition of the club. Godfrey has already stated that he will accept the offer, but Lannon being out of town, the match could not be be closed in consequence. It is not known how tha South Boston man feels in the matter, but his manager, Billy Mahoney, is confident that Joe will not accept, because a better purse can be obtained for a contest of the same number of rounds.

—s>-—— Conrections.—The deposits at the Savings Bank in Summerside in the past six months amount to $49,509.79,—not $39,509.79 as stated ; and the balance of savings at Sum- merside at the end of the year was $333,279.02, not $323,279.02.

We learn that the railway postal clerk on the line west of Summerside, forwards western letters direct to the Stanley. Consequently, a letter sent from Alberton to St. John would not be detained at Charlottetown. This bein the case, eight days—not nine days—woul be mater in the transmission of a letter and a reply between St, John and Alberton.
