WASHINGTON (CP) —- About a dozen big U.S. - controlled Canadian investment companies, with total assets of some 8400;, 000.000. likely will be hit by the! new United States tax laws ef- fective Jan. 1
These. in the view of the U.S. treasury department. are in ef- fect “tax haven" companies promoted to some extent by high-income American investors seeking to reduce tax liabilities. to the U.S. government. I A treasury official says the' “good old days" for these in- vestors are gone. Revised laws will force these and other “tax haven" operations around the world to pay out more cash to the U.S. The changes. however. may discourage accumulation of profits In Canada by these ma-‘ jor investment houses and thisl
