About the first condition in which early rising was permitted was after operation for hernia or rupture, because there is no infec- tion present. Later in other condi- tions. including operation for ap- pendicitis. the patient was al- lowed up for a few minutes the day of the operation. l While in the great majority of. cams in which this early rising after operation is pi-unltted no un- favorable rcsults have occurred, some surgeons. though still allow- ing patients to be up early after operation, are cf the opinion that there should be careful selection of cases.

Early rising or walking after OD:-ration for hernia or where bowcl has protzuded from ab- domen. may he a safe measure provided that firm repair of the abdominal wall is insured by re- liable technique. particularly by the um of nylon fibers in fibrous part of abdominal musclcs.

Early mibulatlon may be prac- ticed aflcr operations on appendix, stamncli. large bowel. bile ducts kidncys and after operations on male and female organs.

However, the patlrllt should not be allowed to get up early who has been bedridden for a prolonged period before operation. While early rising altar operation and stay in hospital has been short- ened to days instead of weeks. pat- ients should be guided by their physician, who may consider a stay of weeks necessary in ce.l.aln cases.
