Tin Elﬁn made several trips yesterday morning with one wheel, the other beintz damaged by the ice. In the evening the dock on the Sonihport side was ﬁlled up with heavy lolly and ice, which rendered it very diﬁicut to turn the boat around. We think an extra effort is being made by the Department to give every accom- modation to the people this season.

A van’ enjoyable occasion took place Wednesday evening, 3rd iuat., at the residence of Goo H. Dingwell, Esq.,.St. Peters Bay, Marie, when his only daughter May W. was united in marriage to Robert Rowland Webster of the same lace. The young couple were attend by Miss Lizzie Passmore of Ch’town, who acted as bridesmaid, and Mr. James E. Ding- well, who supported the groom. After the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. J. W. McKenzie, the party with is large number of friends sat down to a repeat to which ample justice was done It is needless to say the presents, some of which came from abroad, were both numerous and handsome.

A rum broke out about_4 o'clock yester- day in the stable and outbuildings of Mr. George Thorne, on Sydney Street. The building where the ﬁre originated was used as a boiler house. and was connected with the stable where Mr. Thorns kept his pigs. cow and three horses. The ﬁre was discovered before it had made much progress, and the alarm soon brought the ﬁremen and other citizens rushing ta- the scene. Before the brigade arrived however the horses and cow had been re- moved and the ﬁre was rapidly spreading our the roof of the building. I t was something surprising how soon the hose- was brought to bear on the ﬂames but it was sometime before the ﬁre was not un- der control, as it had caught in a quantity of hay inside the building. ' However the boards were soon torn c3‘ and the burning mass deluged by water by which time the tire was extinguished leaving an ugly sight to mark its devastating track. Toe buildingsarethe property of Sheriﬁ Curtis and are said to be insured. Mr. Thorne cannot account for the origin of the ﬁre as he had not been using the boiler house that day.

Court of Chancery.

Thursday, at 2.30, the prisoners-— Matthew Plielan, James Stewart and Patrick Doyle were brought up before the Master of the Rolls, by virtueof a writ of habeas corpus, issued out of the Court of Chancerv. ’

After the reading of the return of the jailer to the writ, Mr. H. James Palmer, on behalf of the prisoners, moved for their discharge, on the ground that the warrant of commitment was incomplete and iusuﬁicient, because the clause re- citing the distress and default, gwaa omitted, and secondly, because the war rant imposed a greater penalty than the statute authorized, namely, theccsts of conveying and committing the prisoners to jail.

Mr. Peters, Attorney General, followed in forcible argument. that the magistrates bad power to insert the costs of conveying and committing, as in the warrant of com- mitment set out, and if not. it was within

to amend any’ errors matter or sub- stance in the warrants, provided he was satisﬁed that there was an offence com- mitted and a conviction duly obtained on the merits, under the powers of amend- mt-nt given by statute.
