Did you know we are going to be paying more for the Student Union Staff in the future? we are. Are the right people getting paid the right amount, though? I don't think so.

As it stands, salaries are: President of the Student Union — $1000; Vice—President - $600; Treasurer — $800; Comptroller — $701; Communicat- ions Officer — $600; U.P.E.I. Sun Staff - $1,440; C.I.M.N. Staff - $1,400; plus'H—onorarimns of $225 to the Social Committee; $150 for the Speaker; $75 for the Recording Secretary; $100 to Winter Carni— va1.Crnuittee; $35 to the Electoral Ctnnnttee7$100 to the Orientation Committee; and $25 to the Fall Fest Connittee. These are all going to change this year. Where should the changes be made?

First of all, one should that one should not take a political office for monetary gain. With governments, most political figures take a loss in income. '

Next, one should consider the purpose of people applying for Student Union jobs. It is true most of us take them to bectne involved or to gain ex- perience; but it is still a job, and as suoh, one expects to get paid for it. I amlwilling to admit that these people should not get top wages but they should not be paid in trading stamps, either.

I am not familiar with all the jobs, but I can speak with authority on a few of them. To begin, I shall discuss C.I.M.N. and the U.P.E.I. Sun.

At C.I.M.N., paid staff members get $35 a month. Here, I get $15 an issue and the rest of the staff that receives a salary get anywhere from $5 to $15 depending on the work done.

This means that each C.I.M.N. staff person gets $280 a year, I get $360 and the rest of the paper staff get a lot less. I don't believe this is fair. we (C.I.M.N. and the U.P.E.I. Sun ) put in as muoh time (and probably more) than the executive, but are being paid considerably less. The pressure we are under is as great (all students know how . hectic it is meeting deadlines) as any pressure the Student Council is under. Why so little, comr pared to them ?

look at the cemmittees' salaries. Winter Carni— val — $100 for five people, at $20 each. With the hassles of a Winter Carnival, they deserve more. Fall Fest — $25. Is Fall Fest really only one quarter Of the work of Winter Carnival? Absolute- ly not! Then shouldn't the Social Committee who takes care of Pigs , Co~eds, and some Balls gets substantially more than both?

This may sound like I am asking for a raise. I am. But I'm also asking for the people who are in the same predicament as myself. I feel that I, as well as the people I've mentioned, and many more who have not been mentioned are worth more to the Student Union than it is showing. Why_should people jn.apolitical positions make less money than people in political positions, considering no one is sup— posed to enter office for monetary gain.

Chairman, I decided that Saturday night's event was to be canCelled. There were a number of reasons for doing so Mr. Green, none of them being fear! One of the reasons behind- my decision was the fact that there were only four campus police signed up for work.
