Fine.-—-The alarm yesterday afternoon about half-past five was for a slight fire at the Finley House, corner of Kent and Prince Streets, A spark from the chimney lodged on the roof and burnt ahole through. The firemen were on hand with their usual prompiness, and there was a large gather- ing of onlookers.

Tus Sxatinc Cuatiences.—The skat- ing challenges which appeared in the Guar- dian this morning will probably not be ac cepted by avy of our amsteur skaters for several reasons, the chief one being that the Hockey Club have the Rink for that night, and although they have no objec- tion toany of their own members offering a challenge, they consider it very officious for an outsider to take the responsibility upon him.

Tore His Coat.—Yesterday afternoon, as Marshal Cameron was rushing across Queen Street te the City Building to sound the alarm for the fire at the Finlay House, a dog, which was silently watching the offi cers movements, made a dash at him, aad, in less time than it takes to write it, ran off with a goodly share of the worthy Mar- shal’s coat-tail between his teeth. The re- marks made by the Marshal at the time are pot on reeord, It is understood, however, that he expressed himself as being decidedly opposed to the curtailment.

Cuance in THR Garrison.—A late Halifax despatch says: The Leicester regi- ment will leave Halifax on March 25th.

to-morrow, and will disembark the East Surrey regiment. She leaves there on Satur- day with the lst Berkshire iment for Bermuda, and will be due here March 23rd with the Ist. Liverpool regiment, and the Leicester regiment will leave March 25th. Three cow pauies will go to Jamaica, one to St. Lucia, and four to Barbadoes, replacing the West Riding regiment, who are to pro- eeed to Cape Town.

Runaway.—Yeaterdsy afternoon, when the tire alarm sounded, a team driven by Mr. Alexander Robertson, of East River, and «his father, was going along Queen Street, past the City Building. The horse took fright at the sound of the bell and started to coe kicking vigorously all the time. In his fight he ran against a post on the side of the street near Apothe- caries’ Hall corner, upsetting and breaking the sleigh and throwing its Occupanis out, The last seen of the horse he was making hia way in the direction ef East River, at a pace that even **Subine’s 2.40 steed” could not hope to equal, with part of the shafts and harness attached to him. We are glad to hear that neither occupant of the sleigh was injured.

Crry Scxoot Boarp.—There was a full attendance of members at the reguiar monthy meeting held last evening. A memorial in answer to & communication from His Lordship Bishop Macdonald in reference to placing St. Jcseph's Convent under the control of the Board was subm tted and read clause by clause and or- dered to be forwarded to his Lornship. The memorial evoked consicersble dis- cussion, particelarly the paragraph therein in reply to His Lordship’s requeat that the nuns be retained as teachers in the school after they have pissed the examination provided by the School Act. The chairman, J.B Mucdonald, Eq , gave notice that he pirposed tendering his resignation as chair- man and member of the Board. It is understood that Mr. Macdonald has had this step in view for some time past.
