its name, which will bear relation in this

column. A young couple who were soon to

be married, while walking along the banks

of the Danube river, saw one of these

flowers floating on its bosom. The aftianced

bride admired it, and fearing it would be

carried away, regretted its fatal destiny.

The lover immediately plunged into the

water, where he had no sooner seized the

flower than he sank in the flood. Making

a final effort, he threw the blossom upon

the bank, and atthe moment of his dis-

appearing forever exclaimed, ‘* Vergiss

mein nicht,” which, Englished, means

‘* Forget-me-not.”

A young lady of New York amuses _her-

self with humming birds as pets. They

build their nests in the lace curtains and

have raised little families in the parlor.

There are plants for them to fly about in,

and every day the florist sends a basket of

flowers for them to extract the honey

from. They are like little rainbows flying

about the room, and they light on the head

of their dainty mistress with perfect free-

dom. She has an especial affinity for the

feathered race, and pigeons, canaries and

bullfinches are included among her house-

hold favorites.

A plant grows in Mixteca, Mexico, which

the natives call the ‘‘herb of prophecy.”

A dose of it produces sleep similar in all

respects to the hypnotic state. The sub-

ject answers with closed eyes questions that

are put to him, and is completely insensi-

ble. The pathologic state brings with ita kind of prophetic gift and double sight.

Furthermore he loses his will, and is com-

pletely under the control of another. On

returning to himself he 1emembers nothing

of what he has done.

Italian archeswologists, who for some time have been at work uncovering the an- cient Greek city of Sybaris, in Italy, have lighted upon evidences of a more ancient city upon which Sybaris was built. The necropolis is in an undisturbed state, and adds strong evidence to the belief in a high Italian civililation prior to the Etruscan and contemporaneous with the building of the Pyramids. Italian scientists place its decline at 1000 B. C., and believe that its people were the real inventors of the pre- historic walls which exist all over Italy where there are signs of Etruscan habita- tion. A report shortly to be issued under the auspices of the Italian Government is claimed to be a complete demonstration of its pre Etruscan civilization.

A suit of some importance has?recently been decided against the city of Montreal. At one of the carnivals an old lady was struck by a piece of fire-works and killed. Her husband sued the city for $1,000 dam- ages. The city pleaded that the woman had not exercised due care, as she approach- ed too near the ice palace. Judge Loran- ger expressed the opinion that as the city had seen fit to allow dangerous pyrotechnic displays on the public squares without the necessary precaution to guard the life of

The time will proba- bly come when swimming will form a part of the course of instruction at our public schools, but individua] action should now take the place of the systematic instruction the public will at some future time provide.

A Sunshiny Husband.

A sunshiny husband makes a merry,

beautiful home, worth having, worth work-

I have seen a timid, meek, self-distrusting little body fairly bloom into strong, self-reliant woman- hood, under the tonic and the cordial of companionship with a husband who really went outof his way to find occasion for showing her how fully he trusted her judg- ment, and how tenderely he deferred to her opinion. In home life there should be no jar, no strivingfor place, no insisting on prerogatives, or divisions of interest. The husband and the wife are each the com- plement of the other. Andit is just as much his duty to be cheerful as it is hers to be patient; his right to bring joy into the door, as it is hers to sweep and garnish the pleasant interior.
