Right Here and Now...

Oh god, October already?!

Please tell me this is a joke, that it’s all just a bad dream and I’ll wake up in

‘philosophy class in mid-september. No?

Crap, ok, better study then.

If you hadn’t noticed last issue, I said we were going to print three issues this month. Apparently I am a big fat liar, because we didn’t. Note to self: Plan more difficult issues later in the year, once you get staffing and schedule issues wotked out. Ah well, live and learn.

Apologies go out to Ben Miller, the generous individual we interviewed for our ‘Road to Afghanistan’ series. I accidentally put his picture in the page with the ambassador and the stock photo in his article. My bad, when all the images are named DC100143 it’s hard to figure out who’s who and what goes where.

Also, you might have noticed some small layout issues, mostly with Mel’s

editorial where I seem to have pasted the end of her editorial like 3 times. She didn’t screw up, that was me again. Mel is actually awesome and super-capable and I’m not saying that just because she put like 30 hours into the Cadre this week.

Enough with the excuses, I thought we put out a pretty badass issue and we’ve got another solid one this . week. A couple of notes from me, we’re still hiring, the jobs can be found at http://upeisu.com. We’re looking for some more reporters to write one story a week, you get paid and free stuff as well as concerts and all that goodness. That doesn’t mean you can’t just write something once in a while if that’s all you can do, just send us an email.

So before you get all huffed up and decide to leave an angry message on our voicemail, or write rude e-mails, ask yourself what you would do in our position. Sacrifice our educational time, or time spent studying? Maybe we should

all drop a couple of classes. Or who needs

I'd like to point something out here that people may not be aware of: We’re all volunteers. Oh, I get paid ($70 a week, if you’re wondering. Which after the 20-25 hours that goes into The Cadre every week puts it at about $0.50 an. hour), almost everyone does, but seriously, we’re not getting rich over - here.

Calling us ‘idiots’ and asking if we sniff glue doesn’t really help anyone and isn’t constructive. It just assures that we'll all sit around and have a good laugh as we listen to it. Besides, most of us prefer beer.

I can’t believe all the nice students who bought a ticket to go see K-OS at The Wave. You buy a ticket with your hard earned cash and you show up waiting for an awesome show by a great up and coming Canadian star. And what do you get? A slap in the face.

I don’t care who you are and where you come from, when you do a show, you do it right.

How disappointing. If I wasn’t busy helping put this paper together, I’d have gone for sure to see him play. I guess I could consider myself a fan... but now that I know what he’s really like, ’m not going to be listening to his music anymore. When an artist doesn’t respect his fans, the fans shouldn’t respect him either.

If he was so sick, he could have cancelled the show beforehand. Sure, that pisses people off too, but it doesn’t waste the fans’ time and money.

On another note, the Cadre has

been receiving emails from several groups on P.E.I. and around the country. The recent cuts by the federal government have really taken their toll. The cuts to the Status of Women, literacy programs and the Volunteer Canada have affected us all in one way or another

As the smallest province, I know we feel the effects more than anyone. The conservative party has taken over our federal government and we have seen a lot of changes for the worst. I encourage students to use their voting power.

Think of these things the next time you are asked to voice your opinion. The student population is huge, we should take advantage of that to make sure the people we want in power win the race.

These cuts affect the people most vulnerable, children and women. We need to make sure these people are , protected and I am not just saying that because I am a part of that group.

A woman who sent ina letter to the editor this week does a great job of telling us the consequences of suffering these cuts. She did a better job than I could of explaining everything, so read it.

Another problem affecting students lately is the spread of a dangerous Norwalk-like virus around campuses in the Maritimes. People are being hospitalized for days because of the severe flu-like symptoms.

People, wash your hands. Seriously. Even if you aren’t going to the washroom, make sure to wash thoroughly and frequently. And use your paper towel to open the bathroom door, those are probably the worst door handles on campus to be touching. In fact, do that all the time, not only when there’s a virus going around.

So to all you people who make fun of me because I'carry Purell on my school bag, I get the last laugh! Ha! So if you see me around campus and you're dying for a dab of 99.9 per cent germ fighting power, just ask. I’ve got the goods.
