Legisiative Council Election.
CONVENTION AT SOURIS — NOMINATION OF HON. SIMON BOLGER.
A ConvENTION met on Saturday evening, the 28th inst.. at the Bay View Hotel, Souris East, to take into consideration the nomination of a fit and proper person to represent the First Electoral District in the Legislative Counci). The Convention was organiz-d by appointing Ronald McDonald, Chairman.
Souris and the adjacent settlements were fairly represented.
E. B. Murtrarr. M. D., first addressed the meeting. Ina few brief, but well chosen words, he complimented the Hon. Mr. Bolger after eight years of public service in the Legislative Council, coming before the electors again for re-election with clean hands. He wouid give him his best sup- port and felt confident that a large majority of the electors would do the same.
How. Mr. Borcer next addressed the meeting. He gave an account of his stewardship while in the Council; and said his sole aim in again appearing before the

A sic sale of raw sugar took place at Mon- treal on the 27th ult. It composed three cargoes of Trinidad—about 1,000 hogsheads. The price was 5.08, which shows a loss of $15,000 on the original cost. The Gazette says : The sale of this lot of sugar is quite a relief to the market, 2s it has been held here for sale all through the summer.

ATa meeting of the Civil Railway Com- mittee on the Canada Pacific Railway depot, on the Sth, it was determined to stipulate for a certain sum to be expended upon the passen- ger depot, and that the locomotives for the whole line of the Canada Pacific and the cars for the eastern section should be built in Montreal in case the city gives the Syndiea‘e the conditions asked for. It was also de- termined to bind the Company to complete withia eighteen months trom May, 1853.

A NuMBER of convicts, working in the Cowel tunnel, near Wayensville, N. C., on Wednes- day evening, unearthed the skeleton of a mastodon, six feet beneath the surface, ix a perfect state of preservation. All the bones of the monster, which had been about 40 feet in length, have been secured. They crumbled somewhat on exposure. Masses of red marble lay above the skeleton.

Tue case of Wilkinson vs. Rev. Henry Ward Beecher for $10,000 elaimed to have been paid the defendant by the plaintiff under a convract made with the firm of Ford & Co , of which Wilkinson was a co-partner, to write for them the ‘ Life of Christ,” was on the calender of the Court on Friday, but owing to it being the last day of the term, and there beirg every probability that the case would eccupy several days, was set down for Novem- ber 6th.
