Graxp Lover or ppreLLows. — The Grand Lodge of Independent Order of Oddfellows, of the Maritime Provinces, commenced its annual meeting at Fredric. ton, N. B., on Tuesday last. The report of the Secretary showed that 450 initiations had taken place during the year, 4 rein- statements and 34 admissions by card. The present membership is 1638, the increase during the year—deducting withdrawals, deaths and suspensions—having been 275, or fully twenty per cent. There was paid for relief during the year $1108 ; to widow- ed families, 192.50, and for burying the dead $338.70. The receipts of the year amounted to $8230, and the present assets of the lodges to $12,850. At the closing session yesterday the officers were elected for the ensuing year.

A marked feature of recent thefts was the taking of but part of the money in the let- ters operated on. ‘The letter would be re- ceived, and show no signs of having been tampered with, and ‘yet part of the money that had been enclosed would be missing. Some time ago letters were found in the pocket of an old overcoat belonging to one of the junior clerks, Samuel Leonard Tilley Rankin, son of Deputy Sheriff Rankin; but as the coat had been used by several of the clerks, and it did not appear who had worn it last, the denial of its owner, who indigns antly declared that the Jetters had been placed there by some enemy of his in the otlice, was accepted. But the losses con- tinued, and the dismissal of the whole staff seemed to be tHe only effective remedy. inspector Dewe arrived the other day, and after quietly studying the case, became sus~ picious of young Rankin. A St. George letter being opened and half its contents abstracted last week, a decoy letter, con- taining $25.50 in marked bank notes, and silver, was sent to the St. George Post- master on Saturday, that official being in- structed to send it back to the same ad- dress that the letter which had been temp> ered with came to. The letter arrived yesterday, was duly received by the gentle- man to whom it was addressed, and when Opened, was found to contain but $16.50. Young Rankin was immediately given into Custody, the arrest being made by Sergeant Hayes and Officer Weatherhead, and the missing money was found in his pocket. Ile was taken to the Police Station and locked up in the Chief's room, and C. W. Weldon, Esq., Deputy Minister of Justice, made acqaainted with the facts. In the lower room Mr, James McArthur was prostrated by a stroke through a window near which he was standing, paralyzing one of his legs and shghtly stunning him, while the apartment was filled with a sulphurous smoke. During the recent hot weather in Eng~ land the bathing accidents so seriously in- creased that the Royal Humane Society has issued and widely circulated directions to bathers. As mischief frequently results from injudicious bathing in this Island, we quote the rules here:—*‘ Avoid bathing within two hours alter a meal, or when ex- hausted by fatigue or any other cause, or when the body is cooling after prespira~ tion; and avoid bathing altogether in the open air if, after having been for a short time in the water, there is a sense of chilli. ness with numbness of the hands and feet ; but bathe when the body is warm, provided no time is lost in getting into the water. Avoid chilling the body by sitting or stands ing undressed on the bank or in boats after having been in the water or remaining too longin the water. Leave the water immes diately there is the slightest feeling of chilliness. The vigorous and strong may bathe earlyin the morning on an empty stomach, but the young and the weak had better bathe two or three hours after a meal ; the best time for such is two or three hours after breakfast. Those who are subject to attacks of giddiness or faintness, and those who suffer from palpitation or other sense of discomfort at the heart, should not bathe without first consulting their medical adviser,’
