Wurrecars tiv Ontarto.—At Morrisburg, Ont., on Friday night, 29th ult., a man named Wm. Pranner drew a revolver and deliberate- ly tired at Frank Beckstead, the ball grazing his head; and later on a mob of Whitecaps de- manded the surrender of an alleged black- mailer named Wenborn, who had taken refuge in ahotel but they withdrew their demand on Wenborn handing over $15 for division among them. No attempt has been made to make an arrest ineither of these cases, the police evidently being afraid to exercise their authority,

Kiss tux 9Twiss.— William Gallagher, a Boston embezzier, finding the ‘‘ Hub” too sultry for him started rather suddenly for New Brunswick a few nights ago. The first intimation his young wife had of his depart- ure was the receipt of the following telegram bearing an Eastport date :—

‘'Trs Trve.—An exchange hits the nail on the head when it says :—If we were to put a two-line local in the most obscure corper of the paper, which stated that a certain business man charged more for bis goods or kept an inferior quality than his competitors, that man would employ a slug- ger to come around and kill us in the morning. ' But if we were to ask the same man for an advertisement of ‘his wares, he would say : *‘ No; I don’t believe in ad- vertising; no one reads the papers.”

An Istaxper INsvuree.—From the Seattle, W. T. Post it is learned that on the 15th ult., John Kenny, of Summerside, brother to Mr. Jas. R. Kenny, while assisting to unload a peavy piece of machinery from the steamer Preniier, at Tacoma, had his ieft leg crushed almost to a = at the knee, by the fall of the machisaery. e was removed to a hospital and the leg amputated, but the surgeons pro- nounce the chance for his recovery very doubt- ful. He was employed on the Premier for the yast year and a half, and the captain spoke of fim as one of the best men he ever had.

CoMmission.-When the Parnell Commission met on Tuesday morning Sir Charles Russell resumed his argument on behalf of the Parnellites, and contended that the objects of the Irish National League were justifiable. The issue before the Commission depended upon proof that Parnell and his colleagues, under cloak of the land movement, planned murders cnd outrages. If no such evidence was produced the Commission must declare that the accused men were earnestly endeavoring to lift an intolerable (byrgea jrom the shoulders of their countrymen.’ The bxamination of Mr. Parnell was fixed for

He Was Basurvrt.—aA New Brunswick ex. change has the following:—On Thursday, March 2lst, Mr. Henry Short, an employe in the McAdam railway works, and Miss Bertie Boon, of McAdam, left by express train for Presque Isle, where they were united in mar- riage, but on his return Mr. Short met with a serious accident a short distance from the McAdam station, by taking a leap from the car and losing his balance. He struck the sleepers and gravel, cutting his left knee and right hand and forehead very badly. It seems he was bashful, and did not care to ihest his fellow workmen at the station, whe — there with open arms to welcome him back.

Hon. Mr. Foster brought down the sup- plementary estimates this afternoon for the year ending June 30th, 18389, totalling $2, - 097,167 as follows: Chargeable to consoli- dated fund, $1,154,132 ; to capital, $419,- 040 ; to capital territorial account, $58,100 ; unprovided items, $465,890. The items for P. E. Island are: Charlottetown Do- minion Building, $675 ; repairs to piers and breakwaters, $2,000; P. E. Island Rail- way, $15,000; _in ‘settlement of James King’s claim for terminating of his mail contract between P. E. Island and the Mainland, $2,960.

This afternoon, Sir John and Mr. Lau- rier delivered eloquent tributes to the memory of the late Hon. Mr. Pope.

Hon. Mr. Tupper brought up for its second reading the bill to amend. the act respecting the safety of ships. He stated that the bill had been up last year, and during recess had been submitted to ship owners and others interested, who had ap- proved of its provisions. strengthen the existing act. Itdefines un- seaworthiness according to the English act by over-loading, under-loading imperfect loading or insufficient manuing. The second and fifth sections relate to grain cargoes, and are taken from the English act of 1880 providing for the use of the Shipping Board or other proper means to prevent grain shifting. A section had been added at the instance of Collecter Ruel of St. John, to prevent evasions of the deck load law at that port, which evasions had taken place by clearing fora port in the United States instead of for their actual destination, a European port. Section 8 adopted the English clause relating to contracts of ser- vice and assumes that in every contract the seaworthiness of the vessel is guaranteed, and provides that all reasonable means to secure that end shall be taken,

It is reported to-night that the Canadian Pacific have consented to build the Short Line, as asked for by many Maritime Pro- vince members.

Big Majoriiies fer Repeal.

Harrax, N.S., April 4.

The vote on the repeal of the Scott Act in Colchester was taken to-day and resulted in a sweeping majority for repeal. The full returns are not in, but those so far show very little opposition to repeal. In Truro, the shire town, only six per cent. of the vote polled was against repeal. The agita- tion for repeal was carried on entirely by temperance people, and the liquor dealers and their friends were indifferent spectators. The repeal of the Act seemed the only way to escape the regiments of legal technicali- ties in this particular county, and this ac- complished, the temperance people believe they can suppress the traflic by the existing Provincial law
