Vaughan, the supposed murderer of Mary Quinn, was arrested at Littl: River on the 13th inst ; evidence points strongly to him as the murderer.

At the business meeting of the Alberton Reform Club, on last Friday night, the fol- lowing were appointed officers for the en- suing quarter: Hon. Mr. Reid, President; E. Bourke, Vice do.; J. P. Fielding, Sec’y; J. J. McLellan, Fin. Sec’y. The number of members in good standing now figure up 265, and present prospects are encouraging. We would suggest, however, that the regu- lar meetings be held weekly, instead of bi- weekly, as at present. It would also be a good idea to have debates on alternate meet- ings. This would supply the deficiency of a most important society, which every well- regulated community should constantly keep up, viz., a ** Debating Club.” The duties of eich male member of a community are two- fold, personal and public. The latter duties necessitate the person not unfrequently to speak and think before an assembly, and worst of all—on his feet. Except in the case of a few heaven-born orators, the latter gi't is only acquired (like most of the usual endowments) step by step, and by the slow and tideous process of trial and error. Dear Str,—Not long since there appeared im the columns of your paper a communication over the sign and manuel of ‘Blue Ribbon,” which brought the Government of the day to task for appointing an officer for the purpose of inspecting the numerous licensed taverns which exist on our Island. Mr. E.litor, I as one of the same color as himself, agree with the argu- ments which he has brought before the notice of the public, and would state that it is only a piece otf injustice which has been perpetrated upon the people of this Island. The Inspect- or, as a Government official, as a reatter of course, has his duties to perform; but, Mr. "litor, the duties set apart for this officer are too limited, and the Government of the day have been too negligent and careless in their official capacity in this respect. Now, Mr. Editor, your correspondent has hit the right mark when he states that we should have, as:

in the United States, saloons—that is, if it is required by the general trav- eling publice—which can produce and

give when called for a drink—which is both benefieial and healthful. Mr. Editor, the time has arrived when this kind of toadyism shall be done away with ; and, instead of such limited power being extended to a man who—

him—know the difference between rum and water. Then, I say, that such should be wiped off the list of our Government officials ; and further, that the Government of the pre- sent day—if they do not remedy the grivance —have forfeited the confidence reposed in them by three-fourths of this our Island. And if the people require proof to show that the ale which is at present manufacture is not only a beverage, I will be only too happy to show and prove that such is the case.

In conclusion, Mr. Editor, I hope that the Legislature will, at its next session, remedy the obnoxious appointment which is already in existence.
