Cot. Hoxter Dvvar, Inspector of F ish- has just forwarded to the Doepart- ment, an able report on the condition and product of the fisheries of this Province for the past season. From this document we loarn that the catch of the staple fish has bee unprecedentedly large, as may be seen from the following table, which gives a comparison of the product of the princi- pal articles for this year and last :-—

The nasber of men engaged was about the same as last year—5,100 men—togethor with, say five hundred girls employed in the lobster factories. Average wages were made by the hands employed in these fish- eries and dependent industries ; but the employers received low prices for the pro- ducts.

Computed at official rates the increase in the value of the above harvest of. the sea is vory marked, inasmuch as the yield of the eoast and streams of P. E: I. in 1878 show-

up to $1,402,501, being an increase of $562,157. Of this large total amount King’s County produced $561,215 ; Prince County, $475,534, and Queen’s County, $365,751.

It may not be uninteresting to show the yield of the waters of Queen's County in the past and present year, thus :—

Official value of product of 1878, $21%,- 955; of 1879, $365,751. Increase on the year for Queen's County, $145,782.

Taking the Province at large, fish struck the usual time, excepting macker- el which were, in places, from a week to to ten days late. In the codfishing there Was 0 special feature to report if we except an ineroased number of trawlers. The quantity, as regards the size and fatness, of spring herring was at first poor, but im- proved as the season advanced. Little or nothing was done in fall herring on the north coast mackerel being so abundant. Mackerel,when they didstrike in,were small

and thin, but asthe seasow advanced they im- proved to medium and afterwards te good. The following is froma fisherman's diary, and refers to the north coast :—July 10th, mackere! began to come in, thin and small, but plenty of them. To August 20th, con- tinued plenty, but poor to medium ; none equal to best. September 5th, first im- provement began to be observable; 10th, 23rd, prospects brightening.

_ Fewer complaints than usual have been made ayainst foreigners seining, for the reason that the American schooners filled up early and, prices being low in the U. 8. markets for the quality they had taken, they did not return for second cargoes. The fish hatching establishment at Dunk River has been opened and ia in partial operation. Fish ladders are iieionte for various parts of the Province Mill- dams, with their rubbish, are Sais xd on as destructive to the fish. The attention of the Department is drawn to the necessity of an appropriation for the better protec- tion of gasperaux and the clearing of the runs to their spawning grounds. Several other subjects of interest are brought to the notice of the Gevernment. Full tabu- lated statements of the various fisheries ac- company the Inspector’s excellent report.

“Potatoes w ere, last week, offered in Montreal freely,in large quantities at 49 to 45 cents ~per bag, but no buyers could be found for them. Of course local dealers continne to purchase in small lots at about the above figures, most of the sales, how- ever, being at the inside price.
