On she night of Thursday last, the end and the centre foundations of the Blneshank Bridge were carried away by a freshet. The bridge was temporily fixed and trains crossed on Friday. The water rose again on Friday evening and swept out the blocking. It is being repaired, and will require some days work to make it thoroughly secure. There have been no other washouts of any conse- quence on the line.

Tue Summerside woman referred to in Saturday’s issue has been found by the police. She was wandering about the northeastern portion of the city, making a house-to-houee canvass, selling some little trinkets. When asked why she did not go home she said ‘ther husband ‘licked’ her and she had to leave him ; the little girl and watch were her son’s, not her husband’s, and she would not give them ap.” The little girl confirmed the woman’s statements concerning the ‘‘lick- ing,” and added that “‘herself came in fora share of it also.” The husband will have to wear ‘‘mourning” « while longer.

Tux plans and specifications and forms of tender for the Government pier at Cape Tormentine may be seen at the railway office. The pier for 1,300 feet from the shore is to be a stone embankment, 20 feet wide on top, with slopes of two to one. The outer end of this embankment gradually widens tiil it at- tains a width of 30 feet on top, and the style ef construction then changes to woolen crib- work 30 feet wide on top, which extends out- ward 1,200 farther, It then turns to the east- ward and runs 400 feet at nearly a right angle with the main structure, then turns again and runs 400 feet towards the shore, forming an excellent harbor, with never less than 15 feet of water. The side and ends of the crib-work are to be close timbered with plenty of cross ties, the pockets to be filled with stone, and the outer sides built sloping.

Griffith has a number of painters at work, and some other necessary repairs are being effected * * * The Princess of Wales and St. Lawrence are also being painted and fitted up, and everything made ready ‘for the season’s work, Mr. J: Alfred Rowe, lately of Esdale Foundry, has been appointed one of the eogineers of the Princess, and the fast sailing record will deubtless be often broken duriug the season.

Gladstone’s Cabinet Among the Breakers,

The breaking up of the Cahinet is im- minent, Lord Kimberly, Sir William Harcourt and Hon. H. E, C. Childers re- fuse to assent to any Home Measures giving Irelend control of the Customs, and they threaten to resign if such a measure be insisted upon by Gladstone,
Mr. Morley demands a modification of the plans for buying out the landlords. Gladstone, however, remains inflexible, and will maintain his full scheme intact.
Cabinet councils are to be held on Mon- day and Tuesday, and the climax will be reached on Tuesday. The Ministers themselves admit that an agreement seems improbable.
G'adstone may make his statement on Thursday without the approval of the Ministry
Gladstone’s voice is again causing him some anxiety, and he has gone to the country to spend a few days for the purpose of recuperating.

The latter defect is apt to escape the attention of the customer until he finds that he is smoking a greater number of plugs than before. The Myrtle Navy is made three plugs to the pound, and each plug is carefully weighed.

A cow belonging to Norman Lorgley, of Paradise, N. 8., gave birth toa calf one day last week, saya the Bridgetown Monitor, that certainly deserves a place among nature's ab- normal creations. The calf has the haunches and hind legs of a bear, the hoofs of these hind legs are split twice, with each part equal; upon one of the hoofs, at the side, is a clw nearly the size of a man’s little finger. There is no joint at the gambrel, but there is one about half way between where the gambrel joint ought to be and the hip. The calf has no power to step, as the legs seem to be loose and can be turned around in any way.

At his late residence, Wood Island East, on the 25th inst., after an_ illness of fourteen months which he bore with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Mr. John Gillis, at the advanced age of 81 years.
He emigrated to this Island from the Isle of Jura, Scotland, in the year 1849. He was a loving husband, an affectionate parent and a kind and inoffensive neighbor, His end was peace,
