Ottawa as a Railway Centre.

In the course of a recent speech, Mr. Thomas White, M. P., predicted a great future for Ovtawa, which, he said, was dest ned apparently to become the greatest ailway centre in the Dominion. He wel- comed the additional bonds of union which were being created between the pol:tical capital and the commercial metropolis, and deprecated the idea of O'tawa’s repudiating the engagement she had entered tuto to give a honus of $100,000 to the Canada Atlanti railway.

In 1879 the total coal sales in Cape Breton for the quarter ending Sept. 30th, amounted to ovly 107,000 tons—being litle more than one-third of the amount suld during the quarter just ended! The Journal says: —‘‘ The shipments of coal from the province for the quarter ending 50h September are within a few tons ef half a million. The increase over same period last year is about 90,000 tons ”

Mr. Eprror.—The duties of the Presi- dent of the Bark cf P. E. Island (now in liquidation) may have been well performed; but it is a painful fact, to many, that the funds of the Bank.were used for purposes not warranted by its charter.

A public efficial, who rays that a large sum of money cllected in his capacity as a public officer, and, as a ‘* matter of fact,” helonging to the Government, is used by him for private purposes, obtains a_ certifi cate for honesty and integrity from Mr. Longworth, The public are thus apprised of this gentleman’s views as to the uses to which trust funds can be applied, and the depositors in the ‘‘Oid Bank” will not- with satisfaction that he possesses the rare virtue of consistency.

A vERpict of ‘‘not guilty” was returned on the 3lst ult., at Toronto, in the case of Jo Se ith, accused of murdering his nncie on the ?Ist of January at Sheiburne, Ovt. The mur- der was oneof themostremarkable iv the history of Canadian crime. The accused, wh» is only fourteen years old, lived with his uicle in a luuely place. Oathe night the murder was committed the boy’ran to a neihbor’s ‘house two miles away. and said that’a man had come tw the house and shot lis uncle with a revolver which had been tired through awindow, 3 he sum of $10,000, which the boy’s uncle kept in a trunk, was stolen. Circumstantial and other evidence pointed strongly to the prisoner's cuilt, but it was not deemed prebable that he could be guilty.
