We were aware, some time ago, that the ‘ Sanctified Press ”’ had not proved a very profitable speculation—that whether the unknewn editors considered that the root of all evil should be carefully excluded from the purlieus of the sanctum whence issued the pious pages, they at all events carefully removed the temptation from the sight and touch of those who were employed in the mechanical duties of giving their lucubrations to that portion of the public who are not over nice in their literary diet, and regard a knowledge of grammar and the possession of intellect as quite immaterial to the successful condactof a newspaper. We were aware of the fact that what money might from time to time be received by the managers, but little was disbursed to the employes; but, really, we were not prepared fur this desperate attempt, on the part of the Nynod, to prop the tottering Protector by the eminently Christian course of lying and slandering. We had, in our ignorance, fondly imagined that a paper should and would rise or fall by its own merits, and that its success depended on the ability with which it might be conducted; and we had been under the delusion that clergymen of a Christian profession should discountenance calumnies affecting the characters or interests of their neighbours. Surely we were in a happy state of ignorance, for we find a conglomeration of parsons not ashamed to make assertions which we defy them tosubstantiato. Let them show, if they can, a single instance of our advocacy of immorality or infidelity : and if there be among the holy conclave any theological casuist, we should feel obliged by-.his informing us whetlier wilful lying may not be classed under the head of ‘ immorality.”’

If the Protector cannot be sustained without such disrenut- able efforts, the sooner it and its incapable hydra-headed corps of Editors vanish from the public gaze, the better for the char- aeter of che Island Press—for the ebaracters of the conductors

Joseph Wyse, éd do do 10s, ————<--- <9 8 a Torticuntcran Exursition.—The Semi-Annual Exhibition of the Charlottetown Horticultural Society came offon Wednesday last, and afforded considerable gratification to those who take an interest in the advancement of the resources of the [sland in this particular department. Notwithstanding the shortness of the notice, there was great variety, as well as abundance of articles exhibited, which were, for the greater part, of superior quality. The Vegetables did credit to the growers. The Celery was particularly good, as were the specimens of Beet root, Carrots and Parsnips. We also observed some fine heads of Cabbage, and several Pumpkins and Squashes of immense size. ‘he show of Fruit was such as to convinee even the most sceptical that nothing but care and attention are wanting, to enable the Farmers of the Island to supply the home market, at least with better Fruit than we are generally in the habit of importing. The season is rather top far advanced to ensure the splendid show of Flowers that would have met the eye a month since. There were enough, however,
