Some tobaccos spurt up in the pipe while mmoking, with little crackling explosions. This is caused by the addition of foreign matter to assist the combustion. When the purity of the tobacco is not tampered with, and it has been properly taken care of, this combustible foreign matter is wholly Gnnecessary. For in that case it burns ata lower temperature than almost anything. Nothing of this kind is seen in smoking the “Myrtle Navy.” It burns with steady com- bustion throughout.

Orrawa, July 9. | Mr, Riopel, M. P., has been working to | wet the regulations respecting the bounty to | fishermen altered, so as to allow a bounty to all fishing boats measuring from twelve to | nineteen feet in length. A petition to that effect has been signed by the Nova Scotia jend Prince Edward Island members, and they will receive the sup- port of New Brunswick and Que- bec members who are interested in the fisheries. The petition will be immediately presented to the Governor-General in Council.

Sin,—One can scarcely take up @ hews- paper now-a-days, without finding in it, one or more addresses to teachers, beginning with ‘‘departure from amongst us” and winding up with al! kinds of sincere wishes for ‘‘future welfare’ which are, of course heartily reciprocated by the half broken- hearted individual who is about to take his

“departure from our midst.” Teachers and Trustees have as good a right to be affectionate and sentimenta’

as other persons, but [ don’t think tho} have any right to make other folks feel bad by publishing in the papers, especially during the dog days, their sorrowful and heart-stirring farewells, Addresses aro oll very well in their place, but as a general rule they are quite out of place unless they are accompanied by something more sub- stantial taan mere words—such as a purse of money, or a souvenir which one would feel proud to show to his friends in after yoars. It is certainly very refreshing to find in this usually cold and cruel world, manifestations of kin:ly feel- ing and protherly love, but then it must not be considered that the only ones who live together in harmony in school matters, are those who publish their mutual admir- ations in the papers. The poet tells us that ‘Many a flower is bora to blush un- seen, and waste its fragrance on the desert air,” and such, to a certain extent, is the case with many a devoted teacher, who never receives an address on the eve of his (or her) departure—nor at any other time.
