An unusual fire occurred on Saturday evening last in the Northern division of the Intercolonial Railway. Shortly after the Quebec express had left Bathurst some of the passengers detected a smell of smoke inthe Pullman car, **Miramichi.” They teld the conductor and he at once made an examination of the heating apparatus which

appeared to be all right. There were twelve passengers in the car including Mr. M. Lee Ross and

his wife. When the train was near Barti- bogue the conductor discovered that the car had caught fire. The passengers turned out in great haste, some of them with very little clothing on excepting their under- garments. Everything that could be done to render the burned out passengers com- fortable was done. When the train reached Beaver Brook, the car, which was

one of the finest on the continent, was | tutaliy destroyed. The loss wl be the Government s. There is no msurance.

The loss is between $15.000 and $20,000,

Beach Wins by Four Lengths.

Lonpon, Sept. 25.

In the boat race on the Thames to-day Beach beat Ross by four lengths. The race between Ross and Beach was for £500 a side and the championship of the world. Beach won the toss for position. When the signal was given Ross was the first to get away, but he only led for a few strokes when Beach passed him and steadily in- creased his lead until he was two lengths ahead. Several barges got in Beach’s way, and he was compelled to cross Ross's bow, but he avoided fouling. The race procession almost throughout.

Seon after midnight this morning a crowd assembled and stoned the police in the Shank hill district. ‘The police dis- persed the mob, the attack upon the police was subsequently renewed and the rioters were fired upon. One young man was fatal- ly shot and twelve constables severely wounded.
