advantages the freight and passenyer traflic here is greater than that of many booking stations, and if an agent was in charge, it would, on account of its position, become one of the most important stations on this branch. We hope ere long to have a freight house and better means of loading cars, as we!l as the approackes improved. We think we are reasonabie in asking for these improvements and we trust our obliging and eflicient Superintendent will see his way clear to grant them for the spring trade.

We expect the Local Government to grant a bonus to the Telephone Company to enable them to extend their line from Mount Stewart to St. Peter’s Bay, thence to connect with the other line at Souris. They have bonused other lines and we think we are entitled to as many favors from them as any other district. It would only be a matter of about $50, and we trust our member will take this in hand this session.

But the most urgent necessity of all is the improvement of St. Peter’s Harbor. A sum of money (6001 think) was granted some few years ago for this purpose, and but about $1600 was expended or thrown away, the contractor having failed to per- form his contract ; and notwithstanding the fact that the Minister promised on Parlia- ment floor at Ottawa that the work would be ‘* proceeded with in the fspring” noth- ing has since been done. St. Peter's Har- bor is a great boon to people for ten miles round, as well as to hundreds of fishermen from the neighboring Province, and by improvement by a wharf and extended breakwater would become an important shipping port. The several wharfs around this beautiful bay, encircled by fine farms for nearly twenty miles, are rapidly ‘returning to the dust,” all on ac- count of the lack of improvements at the mouth of the harbor. In fact, I know of no public improvement which would affect such a large territory, and which could be done at a very moderate cost. We beg to call the attention of our Dominion repre- sentatives, and ex-ditto, to the fact that our petition, asking for a grant for this purpose, is now in the Department at Ot- tawa.

We get the small share of almost every- thing at the disposal of the Government. Inthe host of employes in the civil ser- vice departments of the Dominion and local Governments, how many are from King’s County! Can you answer, and blush not? We claim our share in such appointment. We claim thatwhile millions are spent in other parts of Canada, we see not the thousands. That we are, of all the provinces, the least benefitted byour present fiscal policy, and therefore should receive the greater atteation. That the rate of freight on farm produce is far too high on our railway, inasmuch as Ontario is this year taking our oat market. We say our, because we are the nearer, but on account of freight are driven out. Think of paying a freight of twenty-five per cent on the cost of potatces from Morell to the nearest shipping port ; think of charging us seven cents per 100 lbs. more freight from Mon- treal to Morell or Lot 40 than to Souris, and then tell us we get fair play. Think of Germany sending potatoes to Boston or New York cheaper by far than we can to Halifax, and then tell us that we obtain our share of benefits in this age of pro- gress.

This is an age of progress, and, if we are to succeed as a farming country—if we are to be able to compete with our brother- farmers of the great new West—we must get out of the old, last century rut. This we cannot do while the present high rate of freight is continued on our railway, while our harbors and public works are neglected

and, as ‘‘Joe” says, ‘*is all there, and don’t you forget it.”

The English Hackney stallion Gem, 9 years old, is a magnificent animal, weigh- ing 1400 pounds, of solid color (bay), and is just the horse to cross with ordinary farm mares, combining as he does large size, splendid bone and muscle, grand form and spirited action. His get should sell for cavalry horses, and will likely add an- other attractive feature to the many that the Island has already for the horse buyer. Grem was imported from England in 1888, and was also bought from Messrs Robt. Beith & Co. Too much praise cannot be given Messrs. Clow and Poole for their en- terprise in bringing such tine animals to King’s County.

The cattle include the yearling Ayrshire Bull Rifleman and the two-year-old heifer Model 2nd, from the celebrated herd of Thomas Guy, of Oshawa, Ontario. Both of these animals took first prize at the Toronto and London Exhibitions for 1889, and are beautiful specimens of that most valuable breed—the Ayrshire—that has always prov- ed itself the farmers friend. ‘The sheep in- clude a first prize yearling ram and two ewes of the Leicester breed, and they cer- tainly do credit to the judgment of their purchasers. Some of the Queen’s County exhibitors will have to look to their laurels at the Exhibition next fall, for this impor- tation will be a formidable competitor, The poultry consists of a trio of Brown Leg- horns and are very fine specimens of thet breed. Pisquid Notes.

The semi-annual examination of our school took place here on Tuesday last. The examiners present were Messrs. ‘John Handrahan, Daniel McDonald, George Jay, John A. McDonald, H. McDonald, J. Birt, W. Birt, Angus McDonald and a number of others. The scholars displayed well in theirclasses. The gold medal which was presented by Mr. Handrahan for general proficiency was awarded to Mr. Augustine James McNeill.

Smelt fishing is turning in a great amount of money to the people around here. Mr. Leard, a few days ago, shipped about 1000 boxes to Boston.

Mr. MacVin, the chief blacksmith of this place, shod 18 horses on Monday last. He says that he shod no less thsn 40 horses the week before.

Mr. Gregory McDonald, while he was ve- turning home from Captain Boudreau’s on Sunday night was attacked by three men and got a bad beating. The offending men

Horse Notes. Hermit, the most distinguished of Eng- lish stallions, and that won the Derby of 1867, is alive and hearty at twenty-six.

Pistachio, the three-year-old brother of Nutwood, is described as an unusually fine looking colt, a chestnut in color, and as to gait a little inclined to pace.

Mocking Bird, that made a record of 2.17} last summer and was one of the orna- ments of the Hamlin stable, was at one time in danger of going cheap under the auctioneer’s hammer. A sale had been decided upon, the day fixed, and Mocking Bird, then a yearling, was among the lot to be disposed of. In driving a band of colts from one pasture to another, Mr. Hamlin noticed that Mocking Bird displayed con- siderable speed at the trot and ordered her to be kept out of the sale. She has re- warded the old gentleman’s judgment in a marked manner, and he likes her wel! in consequence. The dam of Mocking Bird was an ordinary mare that cost Mr. Hamlin only $125, and yet it isthe current report
